Oscillators are what produce sound. They come in various shapes that represent how the waveform looks like. Usually sawtooth, sine, square, triangle
When Roland came up with their digital synth Jp-8000 in the mid 90s they had a new oscillator called ''supersaw'' which was 7 detuned sawtooth oscillators stacked on top of each other that produced this massive sound that gave birth to the cheesy trance of the late 90's.
I do like a good supersaw anthem though. Extra points if oakenfold is waving his hands in the air.
Download this freeware on your pc for free supersaws this japanese dude made. Too bad it doesn't work on my mac.

I just was thinking of your comment to that one and then I saw the above.

Not really. Alot of new sub genres have emerged with time and have made trance a very diverse genre since there are no real rules or limits to it's sound compared to many other!
You could easily say that trance is mostly a experimental genre mixture of every other out there, trying to define and create the perfect sound
you're fucking hilarious.

Supersaw's can be good, Airwave isn't a terrible song, but they are so hated because of how overused they are.

Well when it means that all the interesting, creative emotional synth programming that was previously in trance is now gone and we get this shit for 10+ years, yes it is important. You're an idiot.
welcome to the mid 80's to mid 90's. First it was the TB-303 acid sound that was on every record in every genre for a decade, then came the JP-8000/8080 supersaw sound. What's going to the be the next synth that has a peculiar sound or a way of being abused that's going to be overdone for the NEXT ten years?
If the pattern holds up, I'd bet on something coming from Roland once again.
