Sounds good man... maybe you're entrepreneurial spirit would flourish better over there? What kind of society is North Korea that anyone should be envious of? And of course there's no political infighting- if you challenge Castro's regime you're as good as dead. You should really talk to my friend from Cuba and re-think what you just said.

Some guy at school today said that Spain looks just like Cuba (architecture) except people aren't starving and have clothes and shoes to wear.

Of course if you are a tourist and visit Cuba you will find it nice. Did you know the people living in Cuba *can't* go to where the tourists go? The argument I was having with Nou was that he says that he doesn't believe what the people in Miami have to say about Cuba because it can't be that bad and that they are probably exaggerating everything that goes on in Cuba. But if everyone was making this shit up why does everyone say the same thing? The old timers, the young ones, etc. I mean, these people get on fucking rafts and many of them DIE trying to get to the U.S. If it really wasn't that bad I doubt they'd be doing that to save themselves and their family.

Nou says it's not that bad but you go to prison for 20 years for killing a cow (even if it's to feed you and your family). Sounds like a great place to live in!

The girl above you.

I feel that you can not trust the opinions of those from the Miami area on the state of Cuba, they are all either exiles, or the children of exiles. The Spanish language media down there is extremely biased to the point of absurdity, even Rose has said that.

The thing is that the people that are out of Cuba right now were wronged in some way, they had their land taken, they created political problems and family members were imprisoned or forced into exile, etc. Of course these people are going to have nothing good to say about Cuba!

I am not defending the Castro brothers, or the Cuban regime at all. I am just saying that you need to look outside your sphere of influence if you are only getting your information from the exile community.

This is especially so if making comparisons with other Caribbean countries leads you to believe that countries like Haiti are better off than Cuba. Haiti is one of the poorest, least developed countries in the world, the most so of any in the Americas. It has had off and on again civil wars and political unrest basically since its inception!

If political freedom is the issue, then why not have problems with Puerto Rico, which is essentially a colony of the United States? It pays some federal taxes, its citizens take part in military drafts, yet it has no official seat in any legislative body in the US and has essentially no free will to govern itself on the international stage.

There are places in the Americas that have it just as bad as Cuba and a lot of places that are far worse off.

North Korea by far, the comparison is not even possible.

I've been to Cuba quite a few times and it is a beautiful country. My mother goes about 10 times a year and brings medicine and such for the locals. She does not only have access to the tourist resorts, but spends most of her time with real cubans outside of the whole "white washed" tourist district.

Do Cubans have it worse than us in the western countries? Debatable.

Yes they do not have as much luxury, yes they have restrictions of certain freedoms, as well as having more trouble accessing some services that we take to granted. The thing is...

Many of the Cubans my mother has encountered through her travels (not only the ones with tourist permits) talk "freely" about their dislikes of some of Castro's policies. They have less, but make the best of it and seem happier then many of the spoiled westerners we see. They value love and family more than any personal possession. They live life as fully as possible and do not dwell on things they can not change.

At the end of the day who is better off? The person with the miserable wife, kids who cry because you will not buy them a new cell phone, the huge house they can't really afford, the gas guzzling car that they do not really need, and all of the other trivial things...

or

the people that smile and make the best of their situation while putting family and love first? For every cuban that rafted across to the united states, there are 100 cubans that have no interest in doing so. They are fed, educated and employed. For most of them that is all they know and all they need.

The US media blows this out of proportion, because they are still sore about how a tiny island so blatantly flipped the huge super power the finger and got away with it. Castro is considered a hero to many people in latin america and the rest of the world because of this.

Now to North Korea.

I have not been, but this is another case of the media making the situation seem worse than it is. (it is pretty bad though) Having lived in Seoul i was able to get a different perspective on the matter. (the original korean war was more of a west vs east than any actual conflict with koreans). South Koreans long for unification (the financial inequality though is what stops it from happening, assimilating the north and south would creat economic chaos being that both countries are at polar opposites of the spectrum), and many families wish to be united again. South Korea gives so much aid to the North, yet you never hear about it here.

From a few North Korean expats i met (who went through way more than cubans did to get there) the state is under total control and for any resistance punishment is barbaric. All parties seem to believe that once kim jong il is dead the reunification will be sped up. Their nuclear missle program is nothing more than for leverage to gain more aid and diplomatic bargaining power. If they wanted to level Seoul they would have by now. Seoul is called the kill box because it is said that over 300 000 ballistic missles pointed at them from the north could level half of the city in 15 minutes, yet South Koreans live like this is not even a worry or an option

as far as rose saying you get 20 years for stealing a cow to feed your family...in some countries the penalty is death Have you even been to Cuba, or like so many do you just talk about things through what " you heard from....".

The whole world does not have to abide by the "culture" and "values" of the United States...and guess what, it does not always make them wrong or miserable either.
