Just spent an hour or two reading up on compression and playing around with the Opto Comp. I love it. It's so neutral and accurate and really perfect for individual tracks. Just one question, the "Compression" knob is the equivalent to a "Threshold" knob on a regular compressor right?
Also tried the Fairchild 670. It does definitely add a bit of warmth and colour even when not compressing anything so I can see this being used on the master channel at the very end of the mixdown stage for that little bit of extra colouration. Can get some nice effects with it on things like vocals or really dominant leads.
I originally wasn't going to get the EQ1A but I'm really glad I did. Just like the 670, it's main strength really seems to be it's colouration, especially on the highs. It's very subtle but can make leads just that little bit more polished.
I'm really glad I bought these. Wicked little plugs that will get a lot of use. Brickwall Limiter is fantastic too if you need to make up just a few dB.
I seriously need to go and read up on compression a bit more though.

You mean the Pultec? That's why I asked that question above about the Compression knob. The lack of a Threshold confused the hell out of me at first.
ps. I'm not getting any significant CPU spikes at all (Live 7).
