I just hope you realise these people (Beatles in particular) were the people who pioneered various mastering and engineering techniques still used today, and without whom all these modern studio techiques/equipment wouldn't even exist or would had been invented a lot later.

You got me wrong - I strive endlessly for great hooks and my emphasis is on melody and chord progression / emmotion and so on.

Production is as important.

I hate those generic trance tracks that have no memorable melody - just background musak really.

Personally I'm not going to send to a label until I think I have all bases covered plus I'm endeavouring to do vocal trace which is very hard to pull off.

People tell me I'm good at melody and chords, in fact, without wanting to sound pious I find thiose parts just come to me MUCH more easily than the mixing side. I go out of my way to play the notes in a rythmic style that seeks to get away from the way everyone plays now - you know plucks in a dah-dah-dah dah-dah-dah way that seems ubiquitous.

My greatest nemesis is getting the bass and mid base to sound good. This holds me back more than any other, hence why I probably am a little production obsessed just now. I will crack this though. I think Im using the EQ too stridently, and am learning to chose the right sound up front.
