in 2000 ive yet to have any problems with compression on releases i bought. It was later and it had to do with ASOT imo. In like 2004 or something everyone tried to sound like ASOT-tracks to be on ASOT and they ofcourse used their recorded radio mp3 as reference instead of buying the original track that was played on ASOT. ****s.
Imo id rather listen to the 2000 version of the beatles beacuse its not drasticaly clipping as far as i can see on the clip-image. some peaks are good to clip anyway to save your stereo at loud levels. some limitations are needed but not at the level it has become today.
Imo the best sounding records for EDM at a club where around 2001. Yes the tracks sounded alot better in 1995 for homelistening and stuff but have u ever tried playing an early oliver lieb track at really loud levels? Its incredible demanding of your stereo...
In order to have a loud average level you would need a monster stereo who can handle the extreme dynamic peaks and at the same time separate all the details of his tracks, its soo much info there.
Its all about balance imo. Too much dynamics and too low average level before, now its the oposite. Therefore i say it was the best around 2002 or something. there are still many people managing to get loud average levels without making a brick of a record. U know how? Less elements in the track, and the elements that are there are eqed so that they only use the space they are supposed to.
Example is lately psy trance. Some of this tracks sounds both amazing and loud on all the stereos ive tried, including my shit car stereo.
And when i analize those tracks more there are not many elements in there (at the same time that is). Its a warm kick and baseline which never hits at the same time. Its a few hihats way up there. Then the rest is synths, efex and ambient.
