The hamburger you buy at McDonald's may look just like the hamburger you cook at home.
But, in terms of safety, the two burgers are not close. Not unless you buy your own meat directly from a packing plant that you'd not only inspected yourself but was also inspected by a third party. And you demand the meat be tested multiple times for E. coli O157:H7, salmonella and coliform bacteria.
A day spent at the Keystone Foods plant here, one of five in the United States that makes hamburger patties for McDonald's, is a glimpse into the world of extreme food safety.
McDonald's (MCD) is considered one of the best, if not the best, company in the United States when it comes to food safety. "They're the top of the top," says Caroline Smith DeWaal, food-safety director of the non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest in Washington, D.C.

how about the recession, sub-prime crises, etc...which resulted in hundreds of thousands of people (or more?) losing their jobs and/or homes and/or savings and which resulted in our gov'ts plunging into further debt to combat it?
perhaps the est. 300k (some estimates go up to a million) who were directly impacted by the Indian Ocean tsunami?
how about the various conflicts around the world in term of loss of life, displacement, and actual monetary cost?
do you honestly think that our devaluation of media is remotely on par with those few examples that I came up with on a few minutes thought?
devaluation is also rather subjective and ignores the emergence of new opportunities in the realm of media. |
the recession and sub prime crisis is a blip on the world stage. Things are already recovering. And a lot of people are about to make A LOT of money from this downturn (and many already have). The economy cycles, people lose jobs and get new ones... no big story there.
The tsunami didnt happen in our society. But i agree it was tragic as are foreign wars.
the devaluation of media is costing scores of long term jobs. In fact media was shedding a lot of jobs long before the recession.
The result is that the media is starving for audiences and the result can be seen in the schlock that passes as news today for example
