Which therefore nullifies the question. Doesn't it? Let's just close this thread and call it a day.

PS. He also mentions bands that he felt have defined Canadian music such as the Hip, OLP and DMB. There's nothing Cultural about them.

I think the Hip is probably the closest of current bands to define some aspect of Canadian Culture and Music.

I would think a better question would be which artists best represent the musical culture from their home province or territory.

That's why there is no easy answer. Regional expressions, subject matter, musical style, all can vary greatly & still be considered Canadian to some extent.

Perhaps the best way to tackle this is by answering the secondary question of if someone said play me some Canadian music (not music that typifies a global style), you would play ______ and say "that's Canadian music to me".

I would definitely not play Hip but the only ethnic sounding music would be along the lines of (as mentioned already) Great Big Sea or Celine Dion in french (bah)

Which then can lead back to the original question in so far as to ask is The Tragically Hip still the hallmark of that definition today (which is to say are they still as relevant to the equation as they once were?) or are there new artists that one can point to that, while not nearly as established, provide similar qualities and sentiments?

If that's the case (and despite me not seeing the Hip as Canadian culture departing), I can't name any defining artists. (Probably the FOB in me)
