It's more likely that the English named it that, possibly because it reminded them of Guinea in Africa.

Actually the Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese all were the main explorers of that region well before the English (they even discovered Australia hundreds of years before the English), so more likely it was one of them.

yes, i'm well aware of Africa's massive landscape. but nothing....NOTHING i would think would remind me of that continent on a tropical island.
