I don't think that comment is on point at all. We should be encouraging more people to make their own music, not saying to them, "Sell your synths and get a real job, because your first few tunes you just put up on MySpace suck!" It's a bit funny for me to go against that idea, since I used to say the opposite: that I wished people would undergo more preparation for music, think more carefully about trying to get it out there, and have to jump through more hoops to publish it.
But I'm a bit weary these days of the sentiment that the market has gotten flooded with junk because million dollar studios and record label moguls are finally losing their dominance, or that music should be left to the "pros" who can reliably churn out slick well-mastered hits. I love the fact that any old kid can get FL Studio and start making his own music, and that he can upload it to SoundCloud or MySpace or any number of other sites. Why? Because making music is immensely enjoyable, and more people finding joy in life is a good thing. And he might even have some talent, too, and bring other people some happiness as well.

It also dilutes attention/sales from the producers and records that deserve it most.

same position as you man..
the thing is, all the big guys started out shit, all of us did, or still are
constantly worrying about if people are going to like your stuff is the biggest demotivator out there because realistically nobody WILL like your shit for at least a couple of years most likely (even once you can make a competent track)...
the first sign of attention is the biggest challenge i've faced so far actually... i'm trying to go back to just making tracks entirely for myself because making tracks for X just makes me demotivated and 'depressed', and leads to shit tunes

If you feel the need to discourage other producers you obviously lack confidence on your own part. |
as usual, wise words here too...
there's cosntructive criticism, then there's being a jealous ****.

In your case it might not be discouraging, but in Dead_moose's case I think it is. He never posted anything that actually contributed in a way that is appreciated. This time is no different, especially within the context of this topic.
If someone says: "I think I gave up." you don't say something along the lines of "I hope every other non-talent will too.". It's like kicking someone when he's down. It's weak, and nothing other than discouraging.
The right person would tell him to just have fun and help him out where possible. No matter where his skill level is at, the fun factor is way more important. I don't mind inviting a 12 year old that just downloaded fruity loops to just show them how dj-ing and music production works. They love it and it inspires them, as well as it inspires 30 year olds (and older). |
Hell yeah man. It's too bad that there are some really negative people on these boards, but I guess you'll get it anywhere you go.
Some of 'em need to realize that music is primarily a subjective artform, and that some of their negative shit isn't really welcome no matter how justified they think it is.
Normally I'm a chill person but seeing the general piss poor attitude around these boards just makes me rage. I may not be as advanced in my age, nor the oldest wisest sage, but there are some genuine people in this place who could use a little grace, because here's their special space, where they come to share their soul, to make their being whole.
People like us are here to make music an get feedback, focus on that next track, the haters are here to spit, to discourage, make you quit, but if you just let it be, just chill, let the music fill your heart, continue from there as this is just an art, a way to express, to relieve the stress and improve yourself so you can always bring your best.
To the haters.
Although some of your tracks are ill, you gotta remember still, that some of us are new, and not half as "great" as you.
