This protest would be incredibly effective if:
- it carried a unified message (something along the lines of "government responsibility, accountability and transparency for the people the government claims to represent")
- it was absolutely peaceful in nature - anyone instigating violence on the side of the protestors should be removed immediately and handed over to the authorities
- the people exercise their right to Peaceful Assembly, by marching en masse to the site of the Summit, and not providing resistance should security retaliate in a violent manner
- the Summit allowed for the participation of an independent people's representative, someone permitted to be present at all meetings in order to be able to voice the chosen unified message to the other representatives
Unfortunately, you're more than a little correct in your assertion. Attempting to confine the protests to Trinity-Bellwoods will do little more than fan the flames of resentment among protesters, increasing the likelihood of violence. However, sitting at home and doing nothing sends the message that your so-called elected officials are free to continue conducting business that will ultimately affect your way of life, behind closed doors, without you having any say in the matter whatsoever. |
What they are doing about the protesters is called "Kettling" I wouldn't be surprised if they sent in provocateurs to give off the image that we are violent

And anyone who gives a rats ass about personal freedoms should at least be emailing their MP to ask why the government is violating the Canadian Charter by attempting to dictate where and when the G20 protestors will be permitted to assemble.
Find your MP by Postal Code:

they dictate this stuff daily... go downtown with a handful of club flyers and see how far you get.
its disgusting

Not just Canada. Freedom of speech is an illusion in most of the western world. But as they say: if you keep repeating something sooner or later the sheep will start believing it, even though it's not true. |
Some other countries at least know they don't have freedom of speech ha ha

Again, in most cases it isn't the so-called hippies that start the trouble. There's plenty of documented footage showing police/security infiltrators instigating violence in order to justify their own violent actions.
According to the Canadian Charter we have the right to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly, which means that protestors should be able to stand right at the steps of the Convention Centre, if they so please. Do you not see anything wrong with the fact that this fundamental right is being summarily taken away?
And quite telling that you take pleasure in seeing violence inflicted on the very people who have the wherewithal to stand up for those rights, which are in fact your rights. |
problem is, rarely do I see any of these protests being totally peaceful. when I see a mass protest, I don't see a legit protest anymore. I see a mob that has very little organization and dont even know what they are protesting.
seems to me that a lot of them are for sake of protesting, or to stir trouble up. now these people may be a minority, but they are the ones shaping the public perception of what these protests are about nowadays
generally i'm in favour of orderly society, where shit disturbing isn't the only way to get attention. having lived in a country where mass protests are common, and grew up smelling tear gasses way too frequently, I am totally turned off by mob tactics a lot of mass protests turn into.
and i find it funny personally that you're preaching to me about standing up for my rights. clearly you don't know me at all
