And Satoshi.... mmmm... where do I start? The fact is that hardly anyone gets the opportunity to play a long set in this city anymore, so THANK YOU Footwork for allowing him to have an extended set.

He did a seamless transition from where Jeff ended and launched into a musical journey. Some darker drummy, almost-but-not-quite tribal influenced stuff within his first hour that blended into warm, groovy house tunes. Dark but still melodic prog was up next on the menu. And then I just stopped keeping track and let myself get sucked in. Few djs are talented enough to pull this off and it's been much too long since I experienced this. Thank you Satoshi. I didn't realize how much of a void I had for this experience until you delivered it. So effin' good.

Congrats to FW on their 5 year anniversary - here's to many more great years - there simply isn't any other venue in this city I want to see my favourite djs at!

This here ladies and gentlemen is the review that I will read over and over again about this night.

You state so well what I could not formulate into words myself; specifically the "stopping keeping track" of what was happening. There certainly has been a musical void for some time and this was truly a treat.

Looking back at you near the end with my jaw completely dropped summed my emotions up for the night... Wow.

Next up.. Bring on Danny.

A Nightmare On Brant Street

I punch myself in the shoulder, because my original plans for last weekend didn't include Footwork. What was I thinking?.. After friends had bailed on our excursion to see the artiste in Montreal, it occurred to me that making the trek back from Stereo and catching him for the double header was not only possible, but significantly better than the original idea! Four times in a span of a few months seems like a lot to catch a deejay, but I was still hungry for a proper set(s). The "Choose your own adventure" set he played the night before at Stereo was great, leaving me with a smile as I slept like a dino baby on my train ride home at 9:40 am Saturday. I was tired, but I'm a veteran, and was excited to experience Satoshi with others who hadn't seen him before.

We got to Footwork around 11:00. The vibe all night was harmonized happiness.. lots to appreciate with the celebration of the anniversary! The sparklers added a whole new level of awesomeness! These flashy moments happened pretty much all night at random times. Although it was not too packed in the venue, I don't recall too many occasions at Footwork where the dance floor was still fairly full up to closing time. It's nice to see that there's still a strong group of people who appreciate good music that you don't normally hear every weekend. New York's basic house underground scene has been doing it right for the longest time, but with events and support like these, we're not that far off the scale.

There aren't that many contenders I can think of in Toronto who would be suitable to open for Satoshi. The first name that came to mind was Sean Miller, but given his lack of presence in the past while I couldn't picture it. Funnily enough, earlier that evening I had shared an elevator with Sean Miller who happened to coincidentally be in the same condo I went to visit. And then I thought.. JButz! This was an even better choice, given the fact he's opened for SAW recording artists before at Sonic, and who's sleazy sound would compliment the artiste really well. And there's also the fact that he played a killer opener during Lawler @ Circa earlier this year.. lol Anyway! Jeff's set was well thought out and programmed. Slower bpm sleaziness eventually elevating into more deep throat action. Rrrrrrr. I think Jeff should provide condoms every time he plays to reduce the chances of dance floor pregnancy; there were some pretty gross sights during the set lol.. some people forget where they are!

I think it's an honour that Footwork booked Satoshi Tomiie to play their anniversary weekend. As founder of SAW recordings, and an iconic
name in the New York house scene, it was more than suitable. Now.. it's taken me all week to analyze his masterpiece this time around. The Picasso of Prog did it again... but this time his creations took full control, and the comic book he drew on the dance floor inked itself... covering the pages with darkness, slowly enveloping all. Alas, it was 'The Nightmare on Brant Street', and the Dream Master stole our minds and distorted them. I'm still trying to put most of the puzzle pieces back in their rightful place! Damn him! His Footwork set was actually better than his prior one at Stereo. You'd think a deejay would play his best there, but a smaller, intimate venue makes much more sense for him. He played a lot less tech filler, and actually started his set with some dark bombs. This was unexpected; the artiste is not as predictable as I thought. Lots of deeper new york phat bass sounding tracks, spaced out at the right intervals, followed by the nightmare tunes! I recognized

Giuseppe Cennamo - El Gitano (2000 and One Hands in The Air Remix)

that he also played at Stereo the night before. I thought I had heard them all, but his last 30 minutes to an hour was unbelievable. His track selection is manifique! At one point he played this track that was a nonstop build up, and you'd think it was a cliched "dubfire" sounding build, but just when it'd drop, the melody would distort itself past levels of conscious comprehension!! So unreal. Everyone's mouths were gaping at this point... marbles were definately long gone! These 5 hours of an adventure will haunt me for the rest of the year, and because of this, it's finally time to rank Satoshi as my #1 favourite. This is long overdue; I wouldn't travel the world for any other deejay and see them 4 times .

I don't know what more 2010 has in store, but musically, it's probably been one of my best years. Thank you Footwork!!

I know it's probably a long shot, but I'd give my left arm to have Satoshi's set recorded from the anniversary.
