Here is an analogy. I once planned a vacation to Thailand. I figured the guilt of screwing an 8 year old funboy would cause some erectile disfunction, I got a prescription for viagra. Stay with me. Now these pills cost pennies to make. You aren't necessarily paying for just the pill itself but rather all the research and other costs it took to create the drug.

Now pfizer's viagra isn't the greatest example in that it was created for something else and wasn't really financed as much as other drugs for r/d but had I used Wellbutrin, well I would not of had the opportunity to taint my post with child prostitution.

The point being that stating something is only worth the material value is the words of a half wit. Your shoes are worth pennies, same with every single clothing item you are wearing. Do you pay pennies ?

Well I make my own clothes using sheep wool. On a more serious note if somebody try to sell me something on research and development I will pay based on how much I value that research and development. Lexicon 224xl? Research and development. Access virus VA tranz synth that OMG workz just like a plug-in? Oh...

Never tried a Virus before, but I love my Juno. Not really into the whole "synth competition" thing going on here, though. If you like the sound and features of a synth, then it's a good one for you.

I guess that pretty much settles it.

Well.. this has certainly degenerated.

I own a virus, have had it for 3 or so years. It is a good synth with solid sounds, it can be a bit of a bitch to program, so I can understand where the OP is coming from.

I think the advantages of the Virus are first and foremost, having a beautiful dedicated controller, with no setup, no drivers, nothing..

Secondly, not having to even consider for a second what's happening to your CPU usage is very liberating, you can crank the unison up to full blast, you can use all 50 bajillion voices.

Having said that, Sylenth1 is a pretty damm close call as far as sonic power is concerned.

And we all know that plenty of famous producers are making music pretty much in the box that sounds better than anything I'm cranking out of the virus.

So... do you need one?? Or course you don't!

But.. do you want one??

I think people are getting to hung up on justifying the fact that they can't afford to buy hardware, so in order to assuage their low self esteem, they are bashing people they are jealous of.

At the end of the day, this music thing is a FUCKING HOBBY!!!

So if it makes you happy, buy it. And play. And Enjoy.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say before when I said that the value is determined by the person buying it.

To be fair, I don't see this discussion as being as much a "synth competition", per se. I certainly wasn't trying to convince anyone that the Virus is better than anything else, just that it has its strengths and that its price is justified by its feature set, if that's important to you. I owned several Junos (6, 60, 106) back in the 80s and loved them - if I had the space, I'd probably pick up another one. So, in Existo's defense, I think his point was more that the Virus is overpriced compared to other synths, particularly analog synths, when you consider the internal circuitry. Obviously, he's oversimplifying things, as pointed out by Eddie, Mad/Brad, et al., but I can't say that his core argument is invalid - there's certainly a different sort of value that comes from owning a fine piece of analog gear.

If I had 2k to spend on gear in 2010 I would do different stuff with the money on the basis of that there are excellent software synths for those type of sounds why not get a few character pieces to use? But the end of the day if somebody used the virus circa 2001 made a few records sold 30 thousand copies each licenced it to 20 cds and shit, blew up and is touring the world fuck what I thought on a internet message board to him the virus is value. There are many presets and sounds in there that he used for his records though the years.
Take for example Darude. He went through some presets on the access website stumbled upon that sound by accident... made sandstorm. Sandstorm has over 500.000 copies close to a million. It is certified platinum! Now lets keep it 100 here for a second... what the fuck can I even tell him about his choice of gear?
Yup say what you want the virus the supernova the jp the nords ect are on countless amazing records.

You can get a Virus TI keyboard for way less than 2k. More like 1.1k EUR or STG since the Euro is worth shit now.
