Also, while technically not scifi, anything by Neil Gaiman is fantastic - American Gods, Neverwhere, even Stardust. Anansi Boys was a bit of a let-down though. But I'm about to re-read American Gods again. For lighter and more humorous read, you can't do much better than "good omens".

Btw - can someone recommend similar to Gaiman? I'm hooked but he hasn't produced anything in a while and I'm nearly done with my current read.
