I've never tried this before... it intriques me.... is it an aquired taste? Is it like buttermilk? Do you drink it straight or mixed with something like Ribena or something?

I have tried that fermented bread-crumb crouton pop you folks like (I forget the name)... and I was ok until about 1/2 the 2L bottle I got, and it stayed in the fridge for a week. I'd have it again, but not 2L worth.

So is this Kefir something I can just go out to the Russian deli that's 2 blocks away from me, but a small portion, and like it just like that, or is it something that's better tried in the company of my Russian speaking friends to truly appreciate it?

definitely just go to the deli and buy a small carton/bottle. it's a nice cool drink.

Kefir is hugely popular in Eastern Europe. The only thing I guess you're worrying about is the taste - its slightly sour, but thats what makes it so good and unique. In worst case scenario, you can adjust that with additives/sweeteners.

I think that if you like yoghurt, you'll be fine with kefir. Yoghurt is thicker though. Although North American yoghurts have tons of sugar in them so you dont often get the real yoghurt taste.

Yoghurt > kefir.

I feel sick, wish i didn't watch this. This is the time i wish i lived in the US, so i could go and meet these guys and do what they did to these poor animals. They wouldn't be laughing or standing put it that way.

Karma, it's a great thing

magnetonium basically answered it for you, its sour tasting but in terms of health benefits it is pretty amazing.
i also prefer ryazhenka, it is sold at those russian stores as well, i recommend you try it, it is pretty tasty and probably my fav milk drink although it is not as good as kefir in health.
