Ok, here we go. Another Virus flame thread. I appologize.

Everyone raises excellent points. It really doesn't matter to the music what instrument was used to create it. I know for a fact that many of my all-time favorite tracks were 100% Reason. I'm sure there are many tracks and sounds that I love that are from the Virus.

But my point is that you can get those exact same sounds from a Nord Lead 3, the ones that I really enjoy, and you do not have to deal with avoiding the Virus' character. Something I do not like at all.

And, yes, it doesn't matter to the music listener or especially the club goer. If I make the all-time most obvious Virus track it won't matter to anyone so long as it's a great tune. But I do not like the Virus' character because I find it to be overused. I simply enjoy using the Nord Lead 3 more than the Virus for the following reasons:

1) Way better interface
2) I do not have to avoid the Virus' over used character
3) The Nord Lead 3 is capable of all of the same non-wavetable sounds that the Virus can do but with the above two points

If I enjoy using the instrument, the music comes out better. I never particularly enjoyed using the Virus.

Randy: Great! Hey did you get our band's demo for "Rockin' Down the Highway"?

Brad: yeah, I did, that's why I'm calling. We love the song and think it's got potential to hit the Top 40, but it's got a few major issues that I wanted to discuss.

Randy: oh. Really? What....what sort of...issues?

Brad: well, it's the guitars. They sound great, but it sounds like you recorded the lead with a Les Paul, and the rhythm with a Stratocaster, both through Marshall amps.

Randy: yeah, that sounds about right. What's the problem?

Brad: well, our audience is pretty tired of those sounds. They're more into Gibson SGs and Telecasters recorded through Mesa-Boogies these days.

Randy: Oh, I see.

Brad: yeah, so if you could just go buy some new guitars and amps and re-record the guitar tracks, we'll sign the song and you'll be rich.

Randy: OK, cool. We can do that. Hey, what did you think of the melody?

Brad: never heard of it. Is it some sort of instrument?

Randy: no man, it was, ya know, the part I was singing...

Brad: oh, I didn't really notice. But, hey buddy, I gotta run - re-record those guitars and we'll talk.

Brad.
Is.
Dumb.

No, it was just a random name.

Back on topic, I think I've decided on the Kurzweil PC3X. But, if I had to go with one software synth, it would be Omnisphere.

My pick would be Thor.

But it was a hard one for me because I love FM8!

Thor as FM also!

The deeper you dig, the more disappointing you become.

No, the deeper I dig, the more I realise that if I am struggling to create a certain sound, it has nothing to do with the synth but more to do with my own capabilities. Better to take this attitude and learn one synth inside out, than instantly look for another synth the moment I struggle to create the sound I am after.
