reading about the brooklyn and schneider beers:
"This brew is the result of the long friendship of Brooklyn brewmaster Garrett Oliver and Schneider brewmaster Hans-Peter Drexler. Garrett had always admired the delicate balance of flavors in Schneider Weisse, while Hans-Peter had long enjoyed the effusive hop character of Brooklyn East India Pale Ale and BLAST! Garrett's concept for the collaboration was that each brewmaster would brew essentially the same pale, hoppy weissbock in the other's brewery, but with different hopping to reflect the local hop flavor. "
so basically, similar beer only difference being hop profile. i haven't had either but it's likely a matter a personal preference. . .
as to the oragne debate - it's all very subjective. harmful is an aggressive term - will it harm the beer? no. will it alter the flavor a bit, cut through the yeastiness that some people really enjoy? yes. personally, i prefer beer without the orange, or lemon for that matter. but if you like it - then by all means.
edit: and favorite german beer - - - without a doubt, weihenstephaner hefeweissbier.
