Well at least there's some good to come out of this...

Building heights: Say goodbye to stand-alone big-box or liquor stores on main streets in combined commercial-residential areas of the old city. Minimum heights will now be three storeys.

Rooming houses: City staff proposed allowing rooming houses in high-density areas, including former boroughs where they were once banned, but the committee decided to defer a decision on the controversial subject until 2011.

Industry: The old bylaws had no provisions for propane facilities, but in response to the Sunrise explosion, they are now restricted to industrial zones and must be at least 300 metres from homes.

Visitor parking: Council directed staff to include a city-wide ban on paid visitor parking at apartment buildings, which has been in effect for years in North York, but an amendment put forward by Milczyn on Thursday took that off the table

Closing them down or preventing new ones from being built is on the same level of stupidity.

nothing is being prevented from being build - only the location of the patio at the back/top is being discussed

He means the prevention of these patios being built on the rooftop or at the back which are usually SWEET spots to have a patio.

Say I wanted to open up a restaurant, I'd be limited to the side or the front of the building? Stupid. I'd want my patio to be on the top of my building. (Margarita's on Baldwin is great and is a sweet example of this...).

This limitation is retarded.

Regulating this is indeed retarded, but street patios > rooftop patios in any event.

LOL!

Good point!

and not even that but if the owner dies or the place goes out of business that has a rooftop/back patio. the new owners will not be about to use that space. as soon as owners change hands, new zoning comes into effect.

At least in Milton I pay reasonable property taxes and not everything is banned or is about to be banned.

Heck...maybe I'll just go to one of the rooftop patios tonight for a nice cold beer.

I wrote this to my city councillor:

I am writing this email to express my dismay at the new zoning bylaw which bans restaurants and bars from having back or side patios south of Bloor and Danforth. This is just another rule to add to the pile of the constant stream of new bylaws and rules that are making Toronto and Ontario more and more of a boring place to live. Whether that be a ban on new bars on Ossington or in the Entertainment District, this new bylaw, strict new AGCO rules on boat cruises, or mandatory beer gardens at concerts, as a young professional, I feel like what I do for fun is being attacked at all angles by older people who have unrealistic demands on how quiet our city should be, and how we should have fun "safely".

Toronto is Canada's largest city. It should be loud, boisterous and lively. Of course people should have the right to live peacefully, but I think there is way too much weight put on the wants, demands, and so-called needs of self-centered NIMBY homeowners. If they want absolute peace and quiet, they should move to a remote area of Ontario. Catering to these demands as much as we are is ruining our city, and is quite frankly making me reconsider whether I want to live here. I feel that more and more people in my age group are starting to reconsider whether "Toronto the Good" (re: Toronto the Boring) is where they want to establish themselves.
