So are we arguing from a driver's point of view or from a pedestrian/public transit user? Cus personally I don't drive and this whole traffic/lanes/etc business is irrelevent to me - I get out of the subway, jump into the streetcar and of I go (I actually prefer taking streetcars to subway downtown anyway, esp. in the summer)
like I said buses are much more unpleasant to ride in - double streetcars also hold more passangers |
Streetcar gridlock effects everybody! When a street car stops at King and Bathurst, the effect ripples all the way back because both lanes are now stopped. If a bus stops any of the other lanes can still move. It effects other street cars, bikers, drivers. It screws up traffic for EVERYONE.
If you want a faster ride, you would want to get rid of street cars. they slow the entire system down, when not on a dedicated track. Spadina, sure that makes sense, because of a dedicated track. But on Queen and King? Hell no.
Great they are more comfortable, but speed and capacity are the most important things for transit.
Ah...double buses hold more passengers... Let's try and have balanced points.

each streetcar holds up to twice as many passangers as a bus, so if they get rid of all 'cars, they'd have to add approx. 2 buses per each 'car - that's more money spend on bus drivers
the problem is NOT the actual streetcar, the problem are poorly planned track routes (like you said Spadina has a well placed dedicated streetcar track)
