the counter argument is that if they have the technology in the future to do time-travelling, it would be safe to assume they have the technology to not require mobile phone towers.

yeah, except it wasn't part of a movie, it was supposedly filmed at the premiere screening. So it would be unlikely there was a director, or that they would even care that a member of the public covered their face.
And time travel actually is a possibility. Incredibly infinitesimally slim possibility, but still a possibility.
