I've been waiting for a long time to hear these. I guess they are basically what I expected... except for track 4 I have no idea wtf was going on with that one.
I'm surprised it was even entered into the final 6 with all the problems it has. And I'm not going to rip on the track for now but if Rodri submits another track or makes another single g/damn excuse about the horrific note placement I surely will let him have it.
1) Simple intro, too much swishing and swooshing and not any real drive. Everything bounces around too much and although it sounds good I'm really not diggin it. The one thing I do like though is the sub, but the main lead repeats entirely too much. It comes in, goes out, comes in, goes out, and thats basically the entire song.
2) I like the intro, but it also sounds too convenient. And most the groove is from the original midi brad made. Beat drops at 58 and it sounds good, has a little drive to it, but the bass sounds like any over used preset you'd find in any synth. The vocal is a surprise and I like it a lot, but then it winds up just becoming a tease for nothing really. Thats kind how I feel listening to the whole track "ok here it comes... its coming... where the fuck is it?"
I like it better than 1, as it has more energy, but theres no real "release".
3) Intro works, kick does not. Too dry and woody sounding. I also don't like the off beat bass either, it should have a bit more bite and can definitely be worked to push a little harder.
Break is again decent, but it also sounds like its confused. Like "I want to go here.. but maybe we should go there instead". I just became disengaged during the break and thats when I should have been drawn in the most.
Also the gate isn't doing it for me, I have nothing against gates but it sounds more like you were trying to fill/compensate when the track could have used more atmosphere instead. And around 7:30 I would have just ended it there, no need for the house pluck. I'm not sure if you were trying to add variation but it seems like a weird spot to put it.
4) Oh. My. God.
For a second there with that loud ass kick I thought this track was going to turn into a mean, energetic, floor crumbling classic.
I hear the vengeance perc, and then this loud LOUD mess of shit comes out of nowhere, making my ears bleed.
And within 15 seconds I already hear the first obvious mistake... that note... and then I think "he must have missed, not a big deal, I'm sure it won't happen again".
And then it happens AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN and I realize "this crazy mfkr actually intended for it to sound like that?" At that point I'm confused, I hear awful clipping, fast forward and see if only gets worse. At 4:45 that just does NOT sound right how you bring the lead in, I thought a new track was starting. And please LOWER THE GODDAMN LEAD!!! It was too much at that point and I had no choice but to move on to 5.
5) Neat intro, but it seems like I'm hearing the same kicks in every track (except 4 of course). Not sure why.
Bass at 30 sounds too boring, I realize its the intro but comeon people what ever happened to creativity? Try using sounds people are not so use to hearing.
Intro is long.... wait intro is real long... wait wtf did this track just go straight from intro to break? Wheres the buildup? WTF did you do?
Break is over, then the intro seems to come right back. With all the mistakes in 4 its possible I'm actually liking it better than 5 now.
6) Wow that bass sounds so original and different... hah yeh right. It works sure but again sounds too expected. Does noone play around with bass velocity anymore? Throw a drone in there at least to give it some more dynamics/drive. And I would have added some sort of high octave pluck right before the break. It just needs something else and the acid doesn't sound like the right sound choice... maybe you just need a different acid really.
Break, ok well I can at least say this track sounds a bit consistent. Generic but consistent.
Its not all over the place like some other tracks so I give it some props there. Sounds like it had a bit more direction than the rest. But overall there wasn't a single thing about the sounds that made me think "oh neat". All in all a decent track.
As far as my "favorite" I'd definitely, 100%, w/out a doubt, have to go with my own... that was never finished nor even submitted, but still had an obvious degree of originality.
Because I can't vote for my own, I have to vote based on what I look for the most in a track, the "2E's", energy & emotion.
1 seemed devoid of all emotion, although production was on par. But 2 get my vote here. And I think Rodri should have to fund the next contest as punishment... or just pay all the members who didn't participate in the contest. But I said I wouldn't rip on his track, so I guess I lied lol.
It wasn't that bad Rodri in all seriousness, but you made the most newbie mistake a producer can make throughout your entire track, and thats keeping all your levels as high as possible. Thats perhaps the most fundamental mistake an unexperienced producer can make, so don't take the criticism too personal.
It doesn't mean you're a bad person by any means, and I'd hate to see you become apprehensive towards entering future contests. Which is why if you just sell all your equipment now you won't ever have to worry about that. =]
