Actually I think I'll answer this question even if it doesnt really have any relevance at all ot the subject. Yes, I am a DJ, and no, I dont use ableton to DJ. You can hear my stuff here and be the judge for yourself (no processing just gentle limiting to bring the overall mix level up without clipping) http://soundcloud.com/nightshift-dj. Also I would like to state that the reason the first track on Got Demo is in mono and compressed so harshly is because i got it on promo, like 2 months before it even came out from Andy Moor and thats how i got it.

Anyway, I agree to get things as tight as you can before any processing at all, just like mixing and mastering, get it right in the mix first. I am simply just stating the techniques I hear used in compilations these days, and just because you don't agree with them doesnt make them wrong.

^^ There is no right and wrong, just lazy and unpleasant to listen to. I try to apply as little compression and limiting to my productions as possible, so the idea that some talentless hack is going to use his sub-par skills as an excuse to mangle my tracks with a limiter is frankly offensive.

I'm pretty sure capitalisation is important in most languages so English not being your first language is not really an excuse - unless you originally spoke a language with a completely different script. I'm not sure about the lead industry, because I try to stay away from toxins. I don't know much about trance either anymore, because I try to stay away from toxins, but also because (IMO) its a dead genre (cue flames). My favourite producers at the moment include people like Burial, Surgeon, Marc Poppcke, Industrialyzer, Jay Shepherd, Faltydl, Floating Points, etc.

On the more melodic tip, there is good prog out on Outside the box music, but it sure aint trance, because trance is dead.

Fuck me, what happened here.

Firstly on topic, you should not add compression to DJ mixes. If you need a limiter then fine, but any recording engineer that's ever worked with a DJ knows to leave some headroom for spikes.

That way if it gets too much you never have a clip peak, and then if parts are too quiet, you can just up the gain or draw an automatio volume curve to even everything out.

Why no compression? Think about the tracks you're mixing: they've already been compressed and fully mastered, so you're just adding even more compression and stripping any dynamic range.

As for AVB and Tiesto - gimme a break. I'm sure they're nice guys once you know them, but they are big names because they are the easiest thing to hear for every little trance noob just discovering music. A lot of it also has to do with business, not popularity.

Also, those "polls" are a joke. It has been proven they can be easily manipulated, and they're more a contest of who is best at marketing, not at DJ'ing. If you have a weekly radio show, own a label and play trance, chances are you'll be in the top 20, just because of the leveraged marketing that go along with those things.

It's like saying the Grammy's are awarded to whoever are the most musically talented.

Finally, the reason some DJ's do their mixes in Ableton is because they're making commercial products. Many Dj's do their radio shows in ableton because hardly any of it is live anymore and it's easier to arrange everything offline and overdub your voice later.

Listen to ASOT episode 499, where he's actually in a studio doing it live - it sounds extremely amateur with mic levels all over the place,
very scattered arrangement etc.

Mate, I think you need to take a look at the trance scene.

I don't actually think there is a single regular trance night in London anymore, and that's the largest city in Europe.

In LA, the highest populated city in the USA, there is only one regular large trance night. I don't think NY has a weekly big trance night anymore either.

It may not be dead globally, and probably thriving in eastern Europe and south america etc, but it has nearly completely died in the paces it was big in 10 years ago, such as the UK, Canada, and Australia.
