i give stereo prop's for wanting to start something big
i like the kind of dj's they pull in

i only been to bal en blanc, and planning to go to black and blue this year so i dont have much clubbing experience in montreal
but friends and dj's all say montreal is a dope city

so yea if stereo can make something positive and not too cheesey happen i would def come up to party

Probably talking out of my ass here, but the beaver lake area might be a nice spot for an outdoor massive.. or, semi-massive.

Of course everybody that wants a massive and answers on the Stereo topic will say that people are ready.

They just want a massive and actually don't care of the suicidal economics behind it. You will get all excited because 20 people answers yes and you will barely get 900 people with a line-up like that:

TIGA
ADAM BEYER
CLIVE HENRY
AUDIOFLY
MARTIN BUTTRICH LIVE
JORDAN DARE

Not to diss the line-up, it just doesn't work.

Even if you get Papa Sven in there, you really think you will suddenly see 5000 + numbers? no way.

Fact is, considering everything that happened recently...

A- People don't trust new massives. Too many have been canceled, moved to other smaller and less interesting venues, or the attendance as been too low.

You can say whatever you want, even Sasha and Digweed, as good as it was, didn't bring the numbers expected at Forum Pepsi. Everything that tried to replace Cream was a failure.

B- Meaning that people won't buy any tickets in advance, because they are not stupid, they have been fooled too many times.

So NO pre-sale money coming in. The promoters better have some huge balls and some huge $ back-up. Probably the reason why there as been so many changes of venues recently.

When I did RM11 at Forum Pepsi, the set-up and night costs were more than 70,000$. And I didn't have any DJs over 2000$.

C- You just don't come out of nowhere and do a massive. You build something solid first. You build trust. The huge success of smaller nights can justify a bigger event. Right now, afterhours are doing sometimes ok, sometimes good, sometimes bad.

DON'T get me wrong, I'm not saying Stereo doesn't have a good rep, FAR from that. But when 514 started massives, don't forget that it was hard to even get in Sona. There was a LOT of people in the scene back then.

The only guys that I could see pull off something similar to a non-commercial music massive would be a collaboration with Mutek and Piknic. They have the reputation to get a big name event like Timewarp. They have the numbers. As we speak, they are the NEW thing.

And that is what you want to build bigger events on. What is working so well right now, that you can actually go bigger. Not the other way around.

Stereo, Circus, or whatever entity that would want to step into the massive arena as to make sure everything is rock solid before. Very strong numbers.

Right now, with the city closing in on permits and the highs and lows of the club scene, I wouldn't do it. Even if I had 200,000$ in my pockets.

Good points martin,

but you seem to be forgetting one main factor here. a lot of these major events are attended by 40% of people who want to be there for the music and the other 60% who just want to go to the party because it is a massive event and its completely different then being in an after hours. if something of quality is provided / placed on the right date and organized with the right people you will have yourself an event which will not only attract people from montreal / toronto / Ottawa. but people all across the US eastern seaboard.

so when you factor in the quality with the the % of people who just want to be there because its an event of such size then you have yourself a party..

all in due time anyway

Of course, that's obvious. I'm not saying it couldn't work, just saying that the odds are really against anybody that would want to try it.

And considering that the scene can't afford another failure (cause yes, I will say it, some promoters and event failures have damaged the scene), and that nobody as 200,000$ to lose right now... It's playing Roulette Russe.

Are you for fucking real? You must be working for them or something.

If theyre so good why are they failing every single time to launch a new massive???

Let's see

Resolution never ever matched the success of celebration. The only time it sold out it was because of tiesto. The rest of the time it brings 3000-4000 max. Very poor and not bringing the money in. It wasn't even held last year.

Sensation, do I have to remind you how many times it was cancelled?? It never took off

Maskerade: lol at that one. They barely sold any tickets and cancelled it last minute.

Black bal or whatever the fuck they wanted to do the same night as black and blue miserably was pulled back as soon as the flyer came out.

How the fuck do you fail so many times when you're supposed to be a world class promoter???

They are just surfing a wave. The bal en blanc wave, that's it. And they are milking it as much as possible (ie selling twice or three times the advertised VIPs announced lol).

World class promoters would've bring bal en blanc to the next level 5 years ago, but when you prepare the event just two or three weeks in advance no wonder that you won't ever succeed on that level.

True the city is giving a hard time to the promoter but let's not kid ourselves, we all know who the real people behind these events.
