When Ableton first came about I recall that there was a lot of resistance from both clubs and DJs alike (myself included) but to be fair, in the past year or two I haven't come across a single venue that has had an issue with it.
If anybody does question it I just tell them I work with samplers, four decks and effects. Not many clubs have all that in their set up.

As for where the magic comes from... that's sort of the question that no one really has the answer to. Depending on the DJ, it ranges from their technical skill to their Charisma and ultimately their ability to stamp someone elses music with their own personality in a way that people love them for it.

Fair play to you though for getting on the CDJs after having been on Traktor, although I can't help but feel that in time you will come back to Traktor as I am pretty confident that the Traktorites will take over sooner or later.

yeah, going from an S4 to cdj-1000's was quite an interesting trasition, but now that i've started using sd cards for hot cues and loops things are feeling better. now my only limit is the contents of my cd wallet, i'll be really happy when cdj-2000's are the club standard and i can just bring a flash drive to gigs.

i guess it's really up to the OP as to what he want's to spend his money on. my original point was that some clubs are not cool with controller set up in the middle of a bangin' night. case and point: last time i played ECCO some d-bag duo decided to use their controller and two laptops, completely f*cking the entire mixer set-up in the middle of the night. it took us 20 minutes to straighten things back out and the club manager was PISSED. needless to say, they aren't allowed back.... i follow the KISS rule. do as you please.

i can't believe i actually have to say this.... IF YOU ARE ABLE TO FILL A CLUB BY YOUR NAME ALONE, THEN YOUR SET-UP IS IRRELEVENT. clearly, the OP isn't in that situation.... for those of us that need to do a little persuading to get on the bill at a place like the Avalon, telling the promoter/manager that you will need no extra equipment or set-up time is a good thing.

If you are 'just getting started' and you actually get a gig at Avalon, i'm pretty sure they won't mind you bringing in your own stuff...

I have seen/done plenty of controller set ups since I started using digital. Never had a problem like that, I would say the issue is with the people making the change not the technology. Now that I think of it, 20 minutes to return a set up back to standard CDJ setup... are you serious?

Firstly, knowing how various digital set ups, even with two laptop and the most complex noodling, how much would they need to change?

Secondly, unless there was something fundamentally wrong with the set up it shouldn't be that difficult, in which case it's not the digital guys fault.

Thirdly,in that type of situation you do the following.
Get two mixer channels, set them to line in.
Get two CDJs, plug them in and play with the most basic set up so you don't impact the crowd.

Anything else can be sorted after.
I'm surprised the owner didn't sack the lot of you to be honest.

That said, simple digital DJ law, return the gear to it's working status when you are done, it makes it easier for everyone.
