My old Japanese professor was a linguist fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Japanese, French, Spanish, and Italian. That's easily the most languages I've known anyone to be fluent in.

Yeah, there are many hypotheses, but a genetic link does not guarantee a linguistic link (reason why it may come as a surprise that this guy...



... speaks a language related to Turkish ). In order to check whether a language belongs to a specific family, you need to know how the words of a proto-language changed into what they are today in the language you're analysing. There's, for example, the possibility a Celtic tribe adopted a different language (happens all the time) and, while they retained a few words, the language they speak only has some traces of their Celtic past, but belongs to a completely different family now.
