What about browsing tracks and using folders. Preferably, not having to use a mouse or a trackpad during a show would be ideal.
Even though Traktor offers the easymode sync button, I find I get a tighter mix manually syncing it up instead of hitting sync, so being able to mix with the pitch faders, jog wheels, and 4 different cue points is still very important for me.
It just doesn't seem like Ableton would be able to do all that, unless I'm mistaken and if someone wants to correct me with that. |
yes the browser in Traktor is better. The sync in traktor is rubbish except for matching the bpms at the start but i think most people even those that have warped their tracks are manually adjusting the phase to compensate for the shitty detection which can work but sometimes results in awful phase distortion.
I'm not saying one should use ableton , but it can do everything traktor does. So if you want to use the additional features in ableton, to me, the less programs the better. And unlike traktor, the sync in ableton , well it is sort of criminal how good it is. But you can still manually adjust it.

Okay, thanks for the feedback and thoughts guys.
Well, I still press the sync button and then adjust tracks to sync properly with the S4 jogwheel, but sometimes I mess with the pitchfader a bit especially with some older tracks or tracks ripped from vinyl that seem to fall out of sync and not maintain a 100% perfect sync
In terms of traktor's sync button i've gotten used to it, and it's not perfect but gets the job done close enough.
I think the most reliable solution at the moment is run traktor and maschine as separate programs and forget about midi sync, since the midi clock fluctuate and things fall out of sync and just beatmatch manually. In terms of triggering clips, traktor 2.5 introduced the new remix decks which are essentially useful for launching clips, and doesn't seem too shabby.
Ableton is probably great, and I'm probably missing out on a lot, but it seems like a lot of work to map everything and plan out sets and clips, whereas I tend to prefer more having a good library of prepared tools and just running things on the fly. Also, it doesn't seem like it can do things like loop, cue point juggling, or a lot of the live manipulation stuff you can do with traktor.
Vst's also just seem too unreliable in a live setting. I'd hate to load a plugin in a live setting and crash everything.
Also, if I wanted to use a MIDI keyboard, I might as well use a hardware synth and plug it into the mixer since it's not much bigger than a MIDI keyboard.
