if writing is a part of the job, then sure. People with asperger tend to have trouble communicating their ideas. There is an abnormally high number of people with aspergers in high tech industry. They were not hired for the linguistic prowess. To attribute a skill that has little pertinence to the job is illogical. Not completely irrelevant but it shouldn't be the overriding factor when it is not what you are being paid to do. I do think the better you communicate, the better off you are. So one should strive to excel at it as it will give you an edge in any field when added to your other set of skills.

And given a job where writing does count and 2 candidates where one individual is much better at writing but the other is just a better team player, i would pick the individual with the better attitude. When the quality of your writing is not the actual output of your work, i think most would also pick the individual that is easier to get along with. As System J said, there is a base level. When grammar mistakes affect people's lives such as law, sure. But for the most part, adequate is good enough. Being better is also good but i think there are other attributes that might be more important depending on the job.

I know some brilliant scientists who're dyslexic. Can't write for shit, but can speak effectively (with the exception of occasionally odd word choices).

You can't always tell how capable a person is by his or her writing, so it shouldn't be the deciding factor, unless it's for a writing oriented job.

Often times though, one's writing is the deciding factor, regardless of whether it should be.

fuck you alex! informal emails forums etc i just type as if i were speaking and because i have such a large lung capacity i just dont need that many pauses when i am speaking because that lung capacity enables me to finishes a sentence without pausing like a ****** and breathing in again like another ****** and i think that's a reasonable way to go about things if you're just trying to type in the same way as you speak because that's just the way i like to do things and i think it's very reasonable to do it this way don't you agree?

Now THAT's impressive!

I don't think I'll ever be able to pronounce that many asterisks in just one go.

Thank you. My personal writing is quite different from my professional, which is highly regarded. This will frighten those of you who read my posts; I have prepared and delivered training materials on the writing of reports and letters that are used within my company to train staff. I have also been tasked with creating template letters for two of my employers.

Wait... so if I PM PKC to critique his posts I get a picture of his dick? PM SENT!

Hey Paul, call me

What do you guys think? Should a grammar mistake cost you the chance of landing a job?

When you read other people's posts on here, do you take how well they write into consideration in deciding whether to take them seriously?

No, but your ability to run a weighted quick union find on Java should.
