I don't understand it either. I am an atheist and I respect but don't agree with the various religions. I do encounter more and more people who see religion as something bad and wrong ... That just makes atheism a religion like all others. For me, atheism is to get wiser. I don't hate people because they're not atheists but try to understand them |
I don't hate religion either, but the problem is that the religious want special status in society that can not be criticized. This special status means I am forced to pay salary for priests (which is not a part of church tax) whereas I would be more than willing to pay for the conservation of church buildings (which is a part of church tax).
We also see this special status in form of Jews and Muslims arguing that child abuse in form of circumcision is sanctuary because it is an essential part of their religion.
In addition, a number of religious agendas are imposing their own unscientific notions about the world we live in, and both Christian and Muslim fundamentalists have requirements to replace the theory of evolution with their religious beliefs.
There are a number reasons for conflict between atheists and believers, and there are undoubtedly some atheists who directly hate religion. Personally I think as long as religion is what it is for the most part here in Denmark, then religion and atheism can easily live together.
