You said higher bitrate=lower latency, always.
BUT more often than not, you're also quadrupling the amount of buffer underruns, so even though you might have a lower latency on paper, you're really not getting a latency that is useable.
I dont know, I'm no soundcard expert, I just know how to feed machines the zeros and ones that mmakes the ladies panties wet, I haven't really studied it more deeply than that.

Oh I'm not stating it's a state of the art interface. But it can handle Traktor with some FX and timestretching thrown into the mix.
And that's all it was built for. And the NI "DJ interfaces" are among the better, when you're in the market for an all-inclusive controller, although I've yet to read a credible A/B comparison with the newer Pioneer models. That was my argument, even though you chose to debate something else.

I can say that it delivered a far better performance before 2.5 came with the remix decks etc. Pops and clicks at settings where there usually was none. But a little fickling with the settings, I've found that weird combinations of usb buffer/process buffer/sample rate will give surprising latency result, while also keeping sound artifacts to an absolute minimum.
But more importantly is the machine that Traktor is being run on,
and how much resources it is given. Also a thing that will guarantee that you'll run into buffer under/overrun hell, is if you try to analyze your tracks while playing.
I don't think I've tried it on one machine where it didn't cause at least some hiccups.

And people who are doing setups that rewire into reason usually have.. Or there is no usually I guess.. But they usually have more modular setups, with stuff like samplers, fx machines etc. running into a 4 channel mixer.. And that's the opposite market that the S2 is trying to reach. This is an all-in-one controller for dj's who want to mix the classic way - one track going into another, rinse and repeat.
Most people I've seen with larger live rigs that also incorporate dj'ing have had an S4 running in one way or another into an external mixer. And also usually on a dedicated laptop.
Can't say for sure, but I think it's the timestretching algorithm that is the main resource hog in Traktor.

May I ask what kind of interface you're running the audio out from?

I would think it most cases, the option for your runofthemill S2 user would be to use the laptops onboard soundcard, and you have to agree that even with a mac, the NI interface would be preferable.

was using an rme ucx at the time. A tad better than the NI interface. I have 2 kicking around i use for things i can't use my 1% white guy interface.

I think the rewiring thing you mentioned, might be referring to built-in discrimination of anything not stamped with NI Approval.
Which is a Traktor feature, and not a fault with the S2 per se.
Or maybe you're talking about something completely, I don't know, because I am preeeeetty baked right now
