I actually disagree with the forum on my opinions. For me, the progressive trance movement killed trance. What once used to be a focus on harder tones and melodies is now for the most part gone from the mainstream of trance and is replaced with minimal progressive trance. What used to be a hard dance genre (speaking about trance) is now replaced with a slower paced track. Think Cosmic gate of old vs new. Pure example right there of what killed trance. Pop house replaced the trance of old as it is now the new harder trance (for the masses) when wanting something to dance to. More people can dance at a club to Avicii now than to Jaytech for instance.
It is fluctuating out of progressive and minimal melodies now - keeping the baselines minimal - and adding melody - but it still isnt what it was. Instead we now have very melodic music, epic vocal trance, or tech trance. Not saying these are bad - i like trance regardless of its time, but now it takes further digging. But for those who used to refer to trance music as the clubber music this isnt the same thing and they adjusted to other sub genres.
Paul Van Dyk is another example. This guy spoke about how trance and vocal trance is something he hates. His latest cds are as opposite of that as possible.
On the other hand, Oakie, once a king in trance went progressive for years. Lately he has returned with tracks like Full Moon Party - turning back into the older acid trance style.
