well, I wouldn't call trance simply "move your ass" music...but progressive is a lot more...intelligent (although I don't wanna use that word, its the best I can think of). Not only that, but mixing progressive is a lot harder, and more artistic than mixing trance. Those who listen to prog know what I'm talking about
You shouldn't have said that... those words have caused many flame wars in the past
But I'm going to offer my opinion...
(Before I start, I would like to add that I am not biased in any way and I like both trance and progressive).
First of all, I definately don't consider progressive more intelligent than trance... to me that adjective does not fit prog at all. Simple repeating sequences is, in fact, the opposite I think. Well, not really, because I think the way the songs are put together is quite brilliant, but I don't see too much of a comparison between that and melodies, harmonies, scales, chords.... music theory. But that doesn't mean prog isn't good... just different. Cheesy trance may be move your ass music, but what I consider as "real" trance is very intelligent.
And don't going into "this genre is harder to mix than that genre." Trance is extremely challenging when done right... the emphasis is still on building a set, just like with prog.

i find that most of the people who listen to progressive have alot more of the music on their mind. "its so boring" is what most of the empationant people say. they want the journey without taking the trip and that is why they only listen to trance because it has the same 2-2 1/2 minutes til breakdown, 2 minute breakdown , 2-2 1/2 minutes finale then the song is over. Progressive on the other hand 8-10+ minutes long is just to much for the littles minds to handle no offence, cause was like that also. But now its like taking a trip without leaving the house.

I adore this thread!
The electronic art that is Progressive seems to be getting the recognition it finally deserves. Good counterbalance to all those Ferry/Armin threds!
(Not that I don't like uplifting too, just in small doses )

Finally, after all these years the world seems to start and discover progressive..
That's a good thing, but hopefully this won't turn progressive into something everybody wants to do. Enough music styles have been commercialized too much. Well, we'll see

not meaning to sound like a snob, but as mentioned before about progressive being the 'intelligent' music, its pretty true when you think about it. I used to venture to trance and hard house events, and not meaning to generalise too much, but the people I met were not the sharpest tools in the shed. Going to prog events and clubs on the other hand its seems a completely different class of people, not better, just seem a little more clued in...........
hard to explain what i mean with out offending the sh t out of people............peace
