i have never had any luck finding people playing good music on turntable of any genre, including not EDM genres, it's mostly just a collection of weird musical fetishes. i leave the DJing to the professionals and listen to my own music or spotify. i dunno i like airwave and j00f, but also like a lot of the stuff labeled crap on here and i listen to almost any genre. if people want to think trance sucks or old trance sucks or whatever, let them go somewhere else and leave more space for me.

If you ask 10 people to classify a song, chances are you'll get 10 different answers, so why bother getting into all that mess in the first place. Who gives a flying fuck if someone says a song is trance, or someone else calls it psy.

The other day, someone blasted me in a comment on Facebook regarding a remix I just did of a Sean Tyas track, saying I was not a "true psy artist," and that I never would be. I was actually quite happy to read this because I never want to be labeled or classified as a trance artist, a psy artist, a whatever the fuck artist. I'm just a guy that writes music. I also hate labels that try to force me to adhere to one side of the camp with my music, something that has been done to me more times than I care to remember, and which is the reason I no longer deal with certain labels. Fuck classification, and fuck rules, because when making music, there are no rules. Focus on the music, write what you feel, write what you love, and don't get so hung up on all the little stuff.

Genre classification is important. Why do you think a lot of progressive house producers and listeners are so pissed about the likes of afrojack, dirty south, Jordy Lishious, Sidney Samson, Steve Aioki getting tagged under the progressive house tag?

Genre classification is important because it gives the listeners to know which tracks to buy not to buy. To a a new listener who's new to the scene he can get educate himself of how the genre is suppose to sound and the history of it as well. If it wasn't for genre classification my knowledge in so many edm genres wouldn't so broad as it is today. If everything was labelled as EDM then it would be such a mess going through so many shit tracks(as if there isn't far too many) on beatport.

I'd argue that genre already exists, it's called neo-detroit. There was a time when it was actually called neo-trance by some people.

And by the way, listen to this. Made by Shed last year and if it had just a little more plur, it'd probably be epic trance lol.

I would def plur to that. Amazing. Someone should eventually start a "trance by any other name" thread. Tons of good trancey stuff getting released labelled as techno these days.

genre classification is not important at all. least of all because, a lot of the time it is subjective anyway, some of the time people just get it blatantly wrong. and many tunes are hybrids and cross overs of different styles.

i have never typed or asked for 'trance' or 'techno' trying to find music which i think falls under these categories.

what happens is you discover a tune by a certain artist, then you follow that up and branch out from there, noting trends in certain remixers etc and your search can branch out in limitless directions.

genre and classification is pointless for the listener. it is just used loosely for a marker, and it should be noted in what context is it used if you need it to be more defining.
