I listen to pretty much everything! DnB, ambient, breaks, progressive, house...anything.
As for particular artists I like that are outside of the dance genre itself, I like Pink Floyd, Bjork, Ayumi Hamasaki and New Order. So it's all pretty varied.

WTF?!?!?!!?
Unless your listening to a different Smiths and Joy Division to the rest of the world, they're definately not Gothic!
Joy Division are new order off shoot
and The Smiths are a laid back Punk (if that makes sense?) |
First:
Joy Division was the *original band* before Iain Curtis killed himself and *then* they turned into the poppier (and lower quality IMHO) New Order.
Joy Division, the Smiths, and bauhaus are considered 3 of the earliest groups that founded what would later become 80's style gothic (ie: Sisters of Mercy and so on...)
The Smiths happy? Laid back? Have you ever listened to/read their lyrics? Morrissey is one of the most depressed guys to ever belt out a song IMHO.
Example, my favourite Smiths song, Asleep...
"Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
"Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Bye bye"
Not exactly cheery stuff...
Try this one...
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
"Park the car at the side of the road
you should know
time's tide will smother you
and I will too
when you laugh about other people who feel so
very lonely
their only desire is to die
well I'm afraid
it doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh
but that joke isn't funny anymore
it's too close to home
and it's too near the bone
it's too close to home
and it's too near the bone
more than you'll ever know
It was dark as I drove the point home
and on cold leather seats
well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
face after all
I've seen this happen in other people's lives
and now it's happening in mine"
There are several different schools of thought on this, but trust me, it's not at *all* unusual to classify the Smiths and Joy Division as early gothic...especially JD, listen to some of their stuff off albums like "Still", it's an obvious precursor to the the modern movement.
