Creating folders on some shit mp3 player is totally different than creating playlists on an iPod/in iTunes. Totally.

I for one really hate the attention to detail, ease of use, and almost flawless performance of my iPod. It's just too neat *cringes*

If I were to have a perfect mp3 player, it would have a brand name that nobody knows about but me (so I know it's legit) and it would have no system of organization whatsoever. It wouldn't even have a smooth-functioning GUI. It'd be just a piece of plastic and metal with a screen covered in folders so I can easily open my folders and make new folders and categorize my folders and move my folders around as I please. (Folders are rather important to me, as I use folders often).

I just can't stand a music player that so perfectly does everything for me.

I've had iRiver for a long time. Been rocking the E50 for 5-6 years now, but I know how you feel about limited space. 4GB doesn't really cover what I want to have on it

Maybe you ought to check out this one? It has up to 96GB (using 2 x 32GB SD cards, comes in 32GB).
Or, if you've got a pair of 64GB cards, you can convert them from exFAT to FAT32 (using various 3rd party freeware), and you suddenly have up to 160GB.

Oh, I forgot to mention it's really expensive.

First of all, there's an entire website and community devoted to this particular dilemma called anythingbutipod.com

Unfortunately their last yearly top 5 seams to stem from 2009, although that's pretty much when the mp3player market crashed completely and not much has changed since. They do have a nice compare section were you can find devices that fit your preferences, and the forums are useful too.

As for the high capacity players there's really not a lot left apart from the ipod classic, the zune and a few archos devices.
Personally if I were in your position I'd have a look at the cowon x7, A pretty beastly 160 gig player with a battery life that spans over a 100 hours. And Cowon has long been known for providing audiophile-proof sound quality and extensive support for different file formats.

Very interesting. I was browsing on Amazon and I saw a few Cowon players, but when I specified my search parameters to "60GB and more" only iPods came up. However, it turns out they have the X7 in stock after all. Seems we have a very mundane conspiracy on our hands.

It definitely looks like the answer: drag and drop interface, great battery life, good support of different file types and reputed excellent audio quality which bodes well if I want to upgrade my headphones. The one reservation I have from reading online reviews is quite a few people say it's prone to technical problems, and I'm not sure what the technical support for UK customers will be like from a Korean company.

Most likely you will eventually have to send it back to Korea if you're having hardware issues, unless you have extended store warranty.

From what I read there have indeed been firmware issues, mainly in transferring large quantities of music from mac computers which can render the device unusable.

Personally I don't know, I have a cowon i7 and I never had any issues, but it's a far simpler device.
I'd say you should at least make sure you get a decent return policy if you choose to buy one as the issues seem to pop up pretty much immediately if they're there.

I just read they claim to have fixed this issue in the latest firmware update released in April.

you should look into an mp3 player called the Cowon J3. its exactly what you want and offers a lot more than a shitty tin can sounding ipod.
