I have a friend who is on anti-depressants. She's also a serious alcoholic. I've been putting a lot of effort lately into making sure she just stays alive. Her family doesn't seem to want to help her at all. She's headed to rehab, and when I asked her about the possibility of her talking to a psychiatrist there to change her meds (which clearly aren't working for her) she said they barely have anyone who can devote any time to her due to inadequate funding. The place is more of an alternative for people who go to court and are told by the judge they can either go to jail, or go there. I guess I'm just rambling off about it since we're talking about anti-depressants here, but I'm trying to think of anything I can to help this girl. If anyone has any experience or educated insight on this please pm me. It would be much appreciated.

I'd add is that the withdrawl is always harsh from them. Also that if she's both an alcoholic and an SSRI user she's better off quitting one at a time. In that case I'd start with SSRIs since they're much harsher withdrawl wise and it's probably much easier to quit SSRIs first rather than alcohol first. They're probably a lot worse off for her than alcohol is. At least with alcohol she gets a hangover to tell her to quit. With SSRIs she'll just feel gradually more shit over time and find it difficult to quit due to withdrawl.

I don't doubt your positive intent, but this girl will literally drink Listerine for the alcohol if there's nothing else available. Years of hangovers haven't stopped her from drinking yet. It sucks too, because she really is a good person who was handed a plate full of shit early on in her life. I know that happens to a lot of people, but this one is someone I have a chance of helping.


I wouldn't normally drag down a thread with personal stuff like this, but it seems to fit the direction this topic is in anyway.

She needs to hit her rock bottom. Trust me I know. I did, it's why I drink.

Seriously though, the pills are nothing. They don't work if you drink. The booze is the problem. Cheers.

I don't think the pills are helping her (not that I'm all that educated about anti-depressants), but even if she wanted to get off them she doesn't seem to have access to a professional who could make that call. It feels like she's stuck, and I hate that.

She has hit bottom before and come back up. Now it looks like she's headed back down.

seriously, don't listen to these fucking morons. seek professional opinion, duh. fucken psycantmixforshit can't even blend 2 songs together. what the fuck do you reckon he knows about anything? fuck.

When i burned my pops the docs gave me a shitload of meds. It was needed for like 2 weeks, but after that it hampered my life. As someone who has quit both drinking (although i started up again, just with rules. sober people are cunts) and anti depressants I can safely say that the drinking does the most damage and is harder to ween yourself off of.

She should see a doctor first, but what they will tell you is half the dose for 2 weeks, then half again. If she is not being followed by a doctor and was just prescribed some shit, she should not be taking them. They are not an exact science. They do work, but most of the time all you need is to make changes in your life....not a pill. With a limited support system though it will be rough.

I wouldn't listen to the moron that thinks dj mixing skill is everything. Seriously though, he said she can't afford it so you're not actually offering any new info. Pro help might not help anyway, and if she can't afford it then she can't. If she can get the right advice from elsewhere it might be better and free.
