thats the other bullshit thing. they try to regulate how much time you have to spend on it all. teach me the move, and if I can do it right, teach me the next. You arent the one who practices for me, i do that. If i dont practice that isnt your perogative. but when I learn every move of a white belt in 1 day, and then in 2 weeks im kicking the shit out of other white belts, advance my ass. dont make me wait.

i got sick of the tradition too. its for people who are bored and want something fun to do during the week after work or something. It was a sad day when I sat there with the blue belt and absolutely kicked his ass. like, not even funny how bad he lost. I explained to the sensai that im a fighter and none of these things would help against a fighter who gave you nothing to work with. he said basically, that the normal classes arent for people with fighting experience and that he would teach me privately...kinda blew my mind to hear a 7th degree guy saying that classes are recreational.

no doubt that never in my life will I be able to beat someone as good as him. He was so fast, knew so much shit, and fucked me up quick. but hed been doing it for 20 years or something. its like, im in college NOW. how often during the next 15 years am I gonna fight. during the next 5 probably. Ive never met anyone with that little experience in the martial arts who could even remotely intimidate me. those individuals who were good fighters didnt use the art, they used street fighting when they got in fights.

my whole thing is that its something to devote your life to. and its great. but basically it has to be something you love because of more than just its ability to make you fight, cuz thats way down the road.

i dunno where i am even going with that. but there are some random thoughts on the subject

Well... the bodhidarma (damo) story is more of a legend than verifiable historical fact - and it only relates to the Shaolin (Buddhist) martial tradition. Many of the Taoist systems, for example (eg Taijiquan), claim no connection to Shaolin. Most probably gung fu developed in several locations in China at the same time and were shaped by a whole bunch of martial/meditative traditions (Indian Mongolian tibettan etc...). Even if you subscribe to the traditional Damo legend, it says he taught the monks a set of exercises to improve their health, these later developed into combat techniques as the monks had to defend themselves against bandits - so gungfu as we know it today did originate in China.

ive been thinking about getting into some type of filipino ma's (kali or arnis)basically because its in my blood but i havent gotten around to it and i do have some karate experience. What appeals to me about filipino ma's is its a more street fighting art its designed for survival its not as fancy tae kwan do or other arts but they do teach stick/knife fighting first which is damn cool!!

those are the styles i've done. most recent two being wing chun and chi-to ryu, in which i just got my first degree black this past may.

i've been doing this stuff my whole life. eventually you realize that you're not learning how to fight in a certain style, but you're learning how to fight. that's why i can't help but laugh at TKD kids that think they could flashkick someone in a bar brawl.

the spelling of ving tsun, or wing chun, or wing tsun, is dependant on which lineage of "wing chun" you're talking about. Moy Yat, using Ving Tsun, and William Cheung using Wing Tsun. "Wing Chun" is the accepted general western translation. Doesn't mean ving tsun is any more chinese than wing chun. :P

and kung-fu did not originate from bodhidharma introducing movements into the shaolin temple. Kung fu has been around LONG before the shaolin temple. Although Shaolin did give birth to many of the popular and famous styles of kung fu, martial arts has been around in China long before from secular and military sources.

I've had some training in Kali/Arnis/Eskrima, it was fun. However, alot of people I know who train develop shoulder problems later on in life, I guess due to some of the movements involved.

Oh, and to all of you who want to find the Martial Art that's just about raw- real - street fighting...... so you can kick someone's ass....

then you're really missing the point of Martial Arts. A complete Martial Art, along with attack and defence techniques, includes philosophy, health training, internal training, ethics, traditions, healing/medicine, and aesthetic/artistic refinement.

If you learn how to fight, how to kick someone's ass.. then you're a fighter, a brawler, a thug... thats it.

If you have the ability to fight, combined with the other abilities I've listed... then you can begin to call yoruself a Martial Artist.

The best thing to do if 15 people jump you is to back yourself into a corner (as stupid as that sounds). When you're in corner, it's physically impossible for more than two people to get close enough to you to hit you, so that way you've only ever got two people to fend off.

Better yet, run away.

any more than 3 people run the fuck away, and consider after 3. my only thing is to grab the nearest guy and do something fucked up like biting his nose off and screaming at the same time. Then you backaway and you have all this blood on your chin and shit and your breathing hard, and the kid is on the ground screaming. The other two start reconsidering at that point. I always wear running shoes when I go out to bars and clubbing, or when just walking along on streets. Unless the guys were all-star athletes they wont be able to keep up with me, specially not for 15 miles :P

and I wouldnt say that someone who isnt a martial artist who can fight is a "thug". You CAN get morals and philosophy from other sources than the orient

of course when i was younger i took martial arts...i mean...every little kid wanted to be Ralph Matchio right??? anyway, i took Kempo and Tae Kwon Do...but quit shortly after starting to weight lift...just didn't have the time anymore.

of course i always liked the idea of martial arts...i always wanted to go old school and learn in china starting from a child in a monk village where they practically beat it into literally...that would be how i'd come back...
