I'll preface this by stating that i am agnostic....with atheistic tendencies

The irish bookies have put odds on the candidates and perceived front runners to be the next person to wear the silly hat in rome.... best odds so far are for the Canadian cardinal Marc Ouellet... worst are for Bono from U2 at 1000:1

If we get a french canadian pope, i think there may be some positive change for the church.... one being replacing the antiquated (and totally unappetizing) communion hosts with poutine.... I know Jesus apparently used bread but that's just because they didn't have deep fried potatoes, canned gravy and cheese curds. The whole gay marriage debacle will just disappear as French Canadians tend not to get married at all to begin with...

Yeah, I’d like to know what horrible, scarring incident in your childhood turned you into such an ignorant, intellectual-hating philistine?

Also, no one would be able to fucking understand him when he speaks, so less papal decrees in general.

It really isn't a surprised that Benedict considered resignation to be an option. Given the political and dare I say marketing aspects of the vocation it is a pragmatic decision; however, the Papalcy is not about pragmatism; rather, it is about leadership. Yes, one can lead by giving addresses to the faithful all around the world but one can also lead by showing grace and service through illness and sacraficing oneself in order to live out the vocation they have been granted and chose. It is very common for newly elected popes to break down in tears as they await their assention, not because of joy but because of fear at the aweful responsibility they are about to undertake. JPII's view was that continuing to serve despite and throughout his suffering was an testement to serving God and man without regard to self. I suppose I fall more in-line with JPII's thinking on this, as I view Benedict's decision to be an election of self over service to the church.

Yeah, I also think John Paul II's way of thinking was more in line with what you'd expect from a Pope, but in a way I'm just glad the church had the chance to quickly replace the current Pope with someone more charismatic - the Church here in Brazil is very fragmented (which I think is very positive for diversity), but it seems most former Catholics are turning into right-wing born again Christians, and we all know what happens when they get more influence in a country

I'd totally bet on Bono. And Stephen Colbert.
