Yeah, given the layout of Circus, sectioning off into smaller clubs would be a terrible idea. But it is very much possible to get a small crowd in a huge space dancing the entire night. I know it because it is my specialty.

Circus is a huge club, and that needs to be used to its advantage. Rather than section it off and have separate small clubs where the sound bleeds all over the place, it would be better to host special events that would fill the place.

It's interesting to compare Palladium's strategy to Circus, at least for Saturday nights. Far as I know, Palladium isn't exclusive to Insomniac, as they have all kinds of different events such as rock bands, etc. What I have noticed is that the EDM events booked a Palladium are not going every week, they tend to be "special" events every once in awhile with triple headliners and usually either sell out or draw very good crowds.
LMD also did this every few months or so at Circus, take the "Trance Energy" night for example. With several headlining DJ's, good promotion, and strong ticket presales, they were able to get a buzz going about the party and draw in a pretty decent crowd.

With the current state of affairs, there's little possibility of any promoter other than Insomniac bringing in EDM DJ's there every week and drawing decent crowds. It worked different for Spundae & Giant, since they could book Armin, A&B, Ferry, pretty much anybody they wanted. Times are different now, and lesser known DJ's cannot bring the crowds in week after week. Without a good crowd, or expectation that there will be one, people are not going to show up. It's a terrible experience paying for parking and then walking into an empty club that never even begins to fill up, even if the DJ is from the other side of the world.
One strategy might be to book special event EDM nights at Circus. Bring in three good DJ's who are not married to Insomniac, promote it well, and chances are much better there will be a good crowd. Guess that's not the way most clubs work though, instead they have a promoter who tries in vain to fill a huge club against the odds every single week. It's also more of a gamble for the promoter, since if the club doesn't fill and three DJ's must be paid, then it's a financial washout.
Whatever the Palladium does seems to be working very well, though. I know it's a newly remodeled club, but I still hear all kinds of complaints about the sound, this and that...not everyone's going to agree on what a "great" club is. Then again, from what I hear, the Palladium is scheduled to be ripped down and turned into condos, so is it really doing that well? At least it has a good reputation.
Anyway, I think such EDM special event nights hosted by LMD might go over well at Circus, maybe once every few months. People get tired of going to the same clubs over & over, and everyone here seems to be saying they would like to see EDM back at Circus. And if it's not possible due to the way clubs, promoters, etc. work, then how does the Palladium pull it off? I'm sure there must be a way. |
- Palladium EDM events are 18+, just like other concert events (Shrine etc.). Circus isn't 18+.
- We'll see how successful Motive+LMD will be with 420.
