I was thinking about making a post about mnml tracks that held up... really hate this sound and was railing against it back in the day :P

2005-2007 was a pretty bad time for music, but I can't hate on 2002-2004 - lots of great dark prog and some really melodic prog breaks came out during that time. But mnml being the trendy 'replacement' for that sound and a lot of the big prog guys jumping over to that sound was a frustrating time.

Wow, a lot of ill feelings towards the mid-'00s here. Wasn't this also the same time everyone - including this forum - was going bonkers for Trentemoller's The Last Resort?

I'm actually kind of curious to see what albums we'd drum up if we sifted through those years to find agreed-upon classics.

There's a fair share of great albums from that period and a few niche movements that were still delivering quality, but I think this pertains more to the prevailing currents of electronic music at the time.

Didn't dubstep get it's start around 05-06, with the FWD>> parties etc? Some really fantastic music came outta that scene for the first several years.

It probably started earlier than that, but the first time I heard it was in 2005 and it was still in the domain of pirate radio back then.

While I liked the 'post-garage' sound coming out of artists like El-B and Zed Bias in 2001-2002... when the 'hardcore continuum' (to use a phrase called by Simon Reynolds) morphed into grime and later dubstep, that's when the sound lost me for a while. Early dubstep just sounded very 'empty' to me and low on production.

For some reason, I always thought I first came across the term in Muzik Magazine's final issue, where they had a jokey table detailing UK Garage's ongoing genre-splinting in 2003. Not there, though some really funny combinations here all the same:
