I honestly don't see things ever returning to normal.

A lot of the big names will slowly start to fade into obscurity but will probably maintain fairly lucrative incomes from local venues in their own country as opposed to international gigs.

The FB / Twitch live streamers will put on nights on the basis they have accumulated a couple of hundred followers in the hope these people will attend. Unfortunately, these will nights be far too common (if and when some sense of normality resumes)and each night will only have a handful of people in attendance.

The UK government for one are saving a fortune on this.
Police are no longer required to patrol the streets on a Friday & Saturday night when the pubs and clubs empty.
No A&E in hospitals with drunk or overdosed party goers.
Thats just how they want it.

Well... yes.

The government in the UK are looking to cut the police force and drastically reduce the working capacity of the NHS.
Not as many police getting called to deal with the drunk and disorderly on a Friday or Saturday night (or any night for that matter)
As such, not as many people are going to A&E at the weekend because they aint drinking, getting into fights or OD'ing from some cheap sniff or pills.

Long term, the governments wants people to go out and have nice meal with a few drinks and then be home for 10pm
Very fewer people will be causing grief on the streets after then and that's their end game.

The tax they will make on the shifting culture of clubbers becoming diners tax far surpasses what they accrue just now in conjunction with the forthcoming cuts to emergency services.

Example: A group of 4 friends go on night out... spend £50 a head on booze and £50 each on drugs (of which the government gets no revenue from) OR group of 4 friends go out for dinner and spend £50 a head on some food and drinks and are all off the streets by 11pm
No policing required for off their face idiots at 3am....
No ambulances required to attend an incident outside some Pub at 1am

So they're not actually saving any money at the moment. They might save money if every 18 year old who wants to get wrecked in a nightclub converts into a fine dining enthusiast post-Covid.

Not only will this bring a really cool level of enthusiasm/energy for a bit, but there are going to be new promoters who will bring out new local DJs, some top- and mid-tier names will fall by the wayside (because let's be honest, they weren't that good anyway and we realized during shelter-in-place that we didn't actually miss them), some DJs that have deserved to be heard by more people will get more bookings, new sounds and styles might crop up, new venues in unique spaces, maybe more renegade parties (at least at first and, IMO, there weren't enough of them in the last few years) that are truer to dance music's core tenets, yadda yadda yadda.

It's gonna take a while, but I think we're going to see and experience some really cool shit.

There have been hundreds of illegal raves all summer here, although I've not been to any of them. A lot of the seasoned veterans of the illegal party scene frown on them, because most of them are being thrown by opportunists with no idea what they're doing, which is ruining things for the people who've been quietly operating outside the law for years.

Yeah, same thing stateside. I'm hoping to see a shift when things start picking up where some passionate new promoters start cropping up by throwing renegades as they get their feet wet. For now, it's like you've said - too many opportunists willing to take such a serious risk.

If clubs do become a thing of the past, either as a result of Covid-induced closure or because of insidious government policy, the resurgence of illegal parties will only mushroom enormously. We'll end up back in the situation the government found itself in around 1992 when there was an enormous illegal scene that it was spending huge resources trying to police, all the while making no tax receipts from. What happened then was that rave culture was pushed inside the legalised and corporatised space of the superclubs, and I can only see the same thing happening again.

People are not going to stop doing this. In the last few years dance music has resurged enormously in popularity amongst young people. People will keep dancing and taking drugs and staying up all night. Even when society has spent the summer in complete enforced lockdown it hasn't stopped, so it certainly won't when things return to "normal".

So they're not saving a fortune, but they might save a fortune if everyone interested in clubbing decides to instead spend that money at restaurants instead. Because those are substitute services. Right.

Who cares? This cashless system is nothing more than to find new ways of making money and spying on people because they can and to control people because it's rational thing to do.
