Oh, my COVID story is actually a pretty good one! It’s about how I got COVID and, in the process, learned a bit about Korean hospitality… or maybe over-friendliness, depending on how you see it
So there I was, at a bus stop in the outskirts of Seoul, making casual chat with this guy as I waited for my bus to Suwon, a different city in the suburbs. Now, I’m Brazilian, so I’m used to friendly banter at bus stops. When the bus arrived, I said my goodbyes, hopped on, and took a window seat. Except — plot twist — this guy follows me on and sits right beside me
I politely ask where he’s headed, and he just grins and says, “Wherever you are!” I tell him, “Well, I’m off to Suwon to sort out my foreigner card.” And he goes, “Brilliant! I’ll come with you.” Now, Suwon’s a freaking hour away, and I’m thinking, “This is a tad forward, isn’t it?” But he insists he’ll “help with the language” and keeps brushing off my polite attempts to go solo.
Finally, we arrive, and my real contact, a teacher assistant, looks at me like, “Who’s the extra?” I quickly fill her in (in Portuguese, just in case), and she says something politely dismissive in Korean, which finally sends him on his way… or so we thought. Moments later, he pops back in, sidling up to me with, “Mind if I sit next to you? She’s stunning!” I gently hint that maybe she’s not into men, but he just laughs and says, “I like a challenge!” I mean, the persistence was impressive, if nothing else
Three days later, guess who’s got COVID? Yep, just me. The teacher assistant? Fine. My Brazilian friend? Fine. Only other close contact? You guessed it: my “helpful” bus mate.
Anyway, that’s how I learned that Koreans are lovely (if sometimes a bit intense), why I’ll think twice before chatting with strangers there, and how being well-stocked for emergencies is always a good shout

To continue off topic conversations, I spoke to my mom the other day who has been a life long republican. I asked her who she was voting for. She proudly admitted: TRUMP! and then ranted off on illegal aliens. |
I'm married to the child of an immigrant and my mum is the same about immigration in general. I usually stand up for my wife with humour to point out the absurdity of what she says, specially because she's proud we're now also Italian citizens, but it's as though she lived in Bolsonarosphere and reality had no relevance whatsoever.
