sometimes i like to use my gains for finetuning becuase they are knobs... it sems like faders dont always seem as linear as i want them to be.

this seems to be what i hear:

I have to agree with you.

I always use the gain at some point in the mix. You just can't fault the control it gives you but it's also good to have the option to slam tunes around. Again it depends on your style.

There are some mixers that give you the best of both worlds... I know of a few mixers, such as the Vestax PMC-25, and a really nice looking Stanton valve mixer (can't remember the product number) that come with removable line faders which you can replace with rotary knobs, so you can swap them depending on what sort of set you want to play.

Ah yes... the PMC-25.
It has indeed got replacable channel controlers although this isn't really the sort of thing you would be looking to do in the middle of a set but it does give you the option most definately in terms of overall playing styles.

The only Stanton I know if that's a valve mixer is the VRM 10 and as far as I know you can't get rotaries for that. The line faders are removable but you wouldn't have anough room for a rotary there. Although I have been known to be wrong, and equally would like to know so would be interested.

actually they do make rotary replacements... i was actually gonna get this one but instead opted for the xone62 becuase i wanted filters instead of effects.

Hey that's pretty nifty!

So you could in theory have two line faders and then two rotaries and just swap leads in the inputs to change fader style. One lives and learns.

The only draw back I found when I used this mixer a while back was the spacing of the EQs as they are a little close for my personal liking. Very nice sound though.

I wasn't suggesting that they should be replaced in the middle of a set! I meant that if you knew you were doing a house set, you could put the rotaries in, and if you were doing a hip hop/d'n'b/hard house/whatever set you could put the line faders in.

By the way, I read a review a while back on the VRM-10 (I think it might have been in Mixmag or something) and the unit they were testing was angled towards the DJ. The faders were so smooth and easy to move that they kept sliding themselves down because of the angle!

I can just imagine having to fight that as well as all the other stuff you have to put up with as a DJ.
Must admit that my own preference is a little bit of resistance in the line faders, especially since I like having the mixer angled towards me.

Does anyone actually know for a fact that Xone:62 sounds better then DJM-600? Has anyone compared the two mixers on the same setup and could tell the difference?

djm really doesnt soudn that great. its a...mixer that works well and has alot in one package... and thast about all it can claim.

Well shit... I wish I new that a year ago, before I got mine. I got nice studio monitor speakers and a good reciever and having a low sound quality mixer just doesn't cut it. DJM-600 is the only mixer I ever had, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I think people are being a little over dramatic about the whole thing. While the sound quality may not be as good as some of the other mixers mentioned I think for people to refer to it as a piece of crap is not correct.
It happens to be on of the most widely used mixers about, I encounter it frequently when I play in clubs (that and the DJM3000) and to be honest I can't say I hate playing on it. Some DJs even claim it's the best mixer in the world pound for pound. I prefer A & H mixers but that's because I have one at home.

Hell, I even played on a KAM last week and that really was crap, but you get allsorts in this game so one has to deal with it.
