As i've mentioned, these are the extremists, idiots, maniacs that did that attacked the Croatian embassy.
I don't let stupid, uneducated, barbaric ppl anger me...coz if i did, i'd be lowering myself to their level.

There won't be much of a domino effect in terms of attacks on Croatian embassies imo.
The fact is, we have NOTHING to do with Kosovo

Altho i agree with you, we have to point out again that this has NOTHING to do with the current political situation.
Plus this IS different Anita.
Croatia has never been a part of Serbia, whereas Kosovo has been a province of Serbia for centuries.

Nothing at all has changed here in Croatia.
I still go to work everyday, businesses are running as usual, and our gov't still goes about their everyday affairs.

Unless that changes, let's PLEASE refrain from those references...PLEASE.
No reason to throw unnecessary and UNRELATED fuel on the fire.

"STORY: Venezuela said on Thursday (February 21) it would not recognize
Kosovo as an independent republic.
President Hugo Chavez said the Balkan state's separation from Serbia
last week was a sign of U.S. interference.
Chavez, an outspoken critic of U.S. foreign policy, said Kosovo's
independence set a dangerous precedent.
"We don't recognise this so-called independence of Kosovo, we
don't recognise it, we protest against it because I don't know how there can
be countries that accept this, this is part of U.S. pressure, I don't know how
European nations accept this," said Chavez during a cabinet meeting.
Serbian protesters opposed to Washington's support for Kosovo's
independence broke in and started a fire at the U.S. embassy in Belgrade on
Thursday.
"We are making an appeal for this not to be recognized and that a
mechanism for a political dialogue is sought through the United Nations, the
European Union and that this step is taken back. Kosovo is part of Serbia,
recognized by history, geography, its culture, this cannot be accepted,"
Chavez said.
Venezuela joins several countries including China and Russia who have
opposed Kosovo's independence.
Chavez is close to Russia and China as a proponent of what he calls a
multipolar world."

much respect for hugo chavez, much, much respect !!

Like I really care about what a dude who essentially amount to a tin pot dictator things... Chavez's comments have a weight of someone like Musharraf or Kim Jong Il to me...

Kosovo and Vojvodina were never republics of SFRJ like Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, BiH, Macedonia, Montenegro.

Kosovo and Vojvodina are just provinces of Serbia.

Quoted from wikipedia
quote:
The province was first formed in 1945 as the Autonomous Kosovo-Metohian Area to protect its regional Albanian majority within the People's Republic of Serbia as a member of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia under the leadership of the former Partisan leader, Josip Broz Tito, but with no actual autonomy. After Yugoslavia's name change to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Serbia's to the Socialist Republic of Serbia in 1953, Kosovo gained internal autonomy in the 1960s.

In the 1974 constitution, the Socialist Autonomous Province of Kosovo's government received higher powers, including the highest governmental titles — President and Prime Minister and a seat in the Federal Presidency which made it a de facto Socialist Republic within the Federation, but remaining a Socialist Autonomous Province within the Socialist Republic of Serbia. (Similar rights were extended to Vojvodina. In Kosovo Serbo-Croatian, Albanian and Turkish were defined as official languages on the provincial level.

So even during Tito times, politically movement was well under way to grant Kosovo full independent powers within Yugoslavia. Kosovo wasn't just a province in Serbia.

i agree, and i take an interest in history from a standpoint of knowing what solutions to implement as a result of the mistakes made in the past, not in a who did what to who and bitching about how things are today

and yes, brushing people off because they don't understand is counterintuitive to our cause, we need to branch out and let people know whats happening in counties such as ours so things can change, being defensive about the issue wont help anybody

but like i said before, it is a sensitive topic, and you have to be more tactful and considerate when discussing such issues... you have to realize that many of the people on this board are here as a result of these issues and event that occurred not that long ago and the emotional wounds are still there

regardless, amidst all this flaming and confusion, im glad some dialog was established

Oh, I appreciate history very much.

But essentially, Serbians are still claiming Kosovo as part of Serbia based upon historical and cultural claim, because we all know since 1999, Serbia lost de facto control and ability to administer Kosovo.

When someone makes a historical or cultural claim, you are going for some sort of moral claim, which is fine, as long as you can back it up.

Essentially, this was the majority of my argument. What can Serbia do to back up it's claim? Realistically, nothing.

It's like this. If someone punches you in the face, what are you going to do about it? If you can, you can fight back by trying to kick the other guy's ass. You can go to police to have the other guy arrested for assault, whatever.
But Serbia can't do anything, except keep saying how this is wrong and Kosovo is still part of Serbia, and whatnot. Words mean NOTHING if you can't back it up with force.

Kosovo has pop of something like of 2 million, and Serbs only make up around 5%, or around 100,000. That's like population of Waterloo.

Ironic. For a land that supposedly has huge significance to Serbs, seems not enough Serbs care enough to make it their home throughout history.

I will NEVER claim CNN is not a biased news network

But i have to inquire...
I have cable TV here in Zagreb, and i get a total of 5 channels from that have extended Serbian segments of news:
FTV (Bosnia), PTC (Serbia), RTCG (MN), Pink (Serbia), & BN (Bosnia).

I dont wanna say anyone's wrong or lying, but since Kosovo's declaration of independence, I haven't seen
any evidence on these 5 channels of some of the things you have claimed.

This IS NOT ME ATTEMPTING TO AGITATE...just curious. What are your sources?
Are there any videos? Pix?

I thought i read in this thread that Serbian homes are burning in Kosovo as we speak...
Why haven't ANY of these 5 channels shown ANY footage?
What reason could THEY have to censor this news? This is not CNN, NBC, CBC, etc...
Shouldnt this footage be all over their networks day-in day-out?

Canada recognizes independent Kosovo

Canadian Press and Globe and Mail Update

March 18, 2008 at 3:44 PM EDT

OTTAWA — Serbia is recalling its ambassador after Canada announced it will recognize Kosovo as an independent state.

In a statement released Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier confirmed the government' decision to join about 30 countries that have recognized Kosovo since the province declared itself independent of Serbia on Feb. 17.

"We note that a significant number of countries, including our G7 partners and many of Canada's close allies, have already recognized Kosovo,” Mr. Bernier said in the statement.

“The development of Kosovo into a democratic, multi-ethnic state that fully respects human rights is essential for peace, political stability, and economic progress in the Balkans.”

Serbian Ambassador Dusan Batakovic told The Canadian Press that he is being temporarily recalled to Belgrade for consultation — a diplomatic move seen as a sign of displeasure.

“We think that Canada might come to regret dearly in the future this decision,” he told CBC News.

“Can you imagine for instance if Quebec parliament declared unilateral independence the same way the Kosovo parliament did? Would they recognize in Ottawa Quebec as an independent country or not? I mean, this is a precedent set in a very dangerous way and we are very unhappy.”

Recognition of Kosovo's self-declared independence has been a troubling issue for the Canadian government.

Canada has remained mum on the issue partly because recognizing a unilateral declaration of independence could allow Quebec separatists to claim they could leave Canada the same way — with a one-sided declaration.

There have also been fears it would provoke anger among Canada's small, but vocal, Serbian ethnic community. There have been numerous protests across the country since the declaration.

Mr. Bernier's statement stressed that Kosovo is a “unique case” because of its recent history of war, ethnic cleansing and international intervention.

"As the declaration issued by Kosovo's parliament also makes clear, the unique circumstances which have led to Kosovo's independence mean it does not constitute any kind of precedent,” Mr. Bernier added. “Statements made by other countries recognizing Kosovo's independence have echoed this point.”

Canada was part of a NATO force that intervened militarily in the province in 1999 to stop Serbian attacks on the civilian population.

Kosovo, which is 90 per cent ethnic Albanian, has not been under Serbian control since NATO launched air strikes in 1999.

A UN mission has governed Kosovo since, but Serbia and Kosovo's Serbs — who make up less than 10 per cent of the population — refuse to give up a territory they consider to be the ancient cradle of the Serbian state and religion.

The Foreign Affairs Department issued a warning to Canadian travellers in the region after several demonstrations and political gatherings were held in Serbia and Kosovo.

Rioting broke out Feb. 21 in Belgrade, where demonstrators stormed the U.S. Embassy and set part of it ablaze.

With reports from Brodie Fenlon
