Well, it is rather simple. Since we can compute the effect of one mass on a second mass (Gmm/r^2) we can compute the force acting on each of these particles. If we have many particles (masses), and we want to find the force on one of them, we can just do the VECTOR-sum of all the individual forces.
what do you mean by "how does it occur?" I mean, it is pretty basic math. You have multiple forces acting in multiple directions, so the net force is the sum of them.
