It isn't difficult, but it wastes a few seconds every time you make that meal. And I'll bet good money this isn't the only meal you do it with, and that you're like this with lots of things around the house. I know other people pointlessly obsessed with tidiness and appearance, and they end up wasting hours of their week just tidying and ordering things for no reason. |
When they could be better spending their time on internet forums berating other people for doing the same? Give it a rest. I'm a tidy person, and I can't do anything else until things are clean. The phrase "pointlessly obsessed" is akin to accusing a gay person's sexuality of being "pointless" in the context of reproducing. It's not a choice in the first place.

I think that begs the question of where this behaviour comes from. |
That's an interesting statement for two reasons:
a) Us tidy people have a similar view of messy people. We have trouble understanding why you can't keep control of your surroundings, and see it as a problem. Of course, your answer is easy: "it's pointless."
b) I assume you're not familiar with Freud's theory of literal anal retentiveness? In light of that, I'd say his predictions match you as a messy person exactly.
Anyway, I should say that I don't give a shit what my food looks like, but I also don't care if anyone else wants to arrange theirs nicely, either.
