It's sad to think - but the above fact is true for the vast majority of people.

Lasting change does not occur until a point of crisis is reached (a "Tipping Point" as Malcolm Gladwell called it in his book). The more significant the change required the more significant the crisis point ends up being.

Unfortunately when talking about drug (ab)use the change required (to stop) is massive and thus the point of crisis is equally as significant.
