So I went to the grocery store last night and cleaned out the fridge and cabinets. I’m going to be preparing meals like shrimp stir fry (over brown rice instead of white rice), and turkey burgers instead of hamburgers, on whole wheat buns, meatballs made from ground turkey and sirloin over wheat pasta, etc…mostly just substituting healthy alternatives in my diet.
Now…my workout time is going to be anywhere between 7:30-9:00. I don’t like going to the gym right after work because it’s really packed then. Should I go home first and eat those meals and let my food settle and then go work out? What about the whole protein shake and/or protein within 45 minutes of your workout? That’s mostly for weight training right? I’m mostly going to be doing cardio and abs in the beginning. Light on the weight training, more on cardio at first, so is it ok to skip the whole protein rule until I start focusing mainly on lifting weights?
Or..
Should I have something light for breakfast (I usually grab a banana on my way out the door and eat it in the car with a full bottle of water) and then have a late lunch like a sub or something and then not have dinner until after my workout? Maybe I’ll have a snack before the gym like a granola bar and some fruit..just something to hold me over until I eat dinner.
Right now I just want to tighten things up a bit and get my heart in shape. |
I wouldn't worry about getting a high protein meal in after your workout until you are doing weight training. Then you need to get the protein to your muscles quickly, and the shakes are good for that because they are easy to digest.
Since you are talking about just tightening up and getting your heart in shape I'd say eat dinner first, then work out later. If you are not working out until between 7:30 and 9 at night after that would be pretty late at night to eat a full meal. If I was trying to loose weight eating late at night wasn't good for me, you never really have time to burn off any of the calories from that meal before you go to bed. Weight training is a whole different story, getting a protein meal before bed is important then.
