IAEA still hasn't moved up the disaster level.

Anyway you slice it, it's still not as bad as Chernobyl.

If I had posted "this is a terrible disaster, threatening to kill us all" would it be better because it falls in line with your world view.

If so, then yes, this will KILL YOU unless you go and you eat 100 iodine pills right now. RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

From what I've read about this latest update, comparing it to Chernobyl, is a little premature.

The total release of radioactive [anything] from the Fukushima plant (so far) is less than 10% of what the Chernobyl indecent released as soon as it went BANG.

I'm not saying it's not a bad situation over there, because it obviously isn't good, but basing anything on what the the major news outlets are reporting is a slight mistake. Hype, and all that.

Better to be safe than sorry though.

Having said that, don't want to create mass panic for no reason, but I think they should evacuate all the residents within a reasonably close distance of the plant/area until it's well and truly resolved.

They've already done that, weeks ago.

I think the whole region is fucked, i think all of you who think it's premature really don't know that the little we hear is only a fraction of what's being reported. i think it's serious, it's already in the environment and regardless of the half life, it's going to transform and mutate shit. Godzilla may really rise up from the ocean after they dump all into the ocean.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way hating on JP, I just think we shouldn't play down the severity based on the information we receive. I mean, those workers who were working in the small amount of water and were taken out because they were exposed earlier on - why the fuck did they have to walk out of the plant with a tarp shielding them from the media?

Certainly not fear mongering either, it's in the water, it's in the plankton, then the fish eat it, bigger fish eat the smaller fish, etc. Water evaporates, rains on the rice fields, its in the soil and the rice. I don't understand why everyone wants to downplay it by saying 'it's not like chernobyl', when they start stuffing diapers in cracks in the reactor core that shit means to me that shit is like chernobyl, just like the concrete they were pouring in the ponds collected around the reactors.

Can we all demonstrate a sense of urgency here, this will change the world and habitable regions which ultimately fucked my vacation to JP.

Ask yourself, would you take a vacation to JP now? If you say yes without hesitation you're blatantly lying.

No, I'm not lying. I was there during the whole time and I only came back because I had to.

Given the opportunity to study there for the next 4 years, I'd go in a heartbeat.

I'm going next month for a friend's wedding, and nobody in our group ever considered not going because we know that Osaka, Kochi, and even Tokyo are far enough away for it not to be a problem.

The only people who have had reservations about it are the groom's parents, and they're just going to fly into Osaka and skip the Tokyo part of the trip (the wedding is not in Tokyo).

To me, avoiding the entire nation of Japan because of this would be like canceling a vacation to Miami or Chicago because of Hurricane Katrina. It doesn't make much sense.

You can't tell me you have zero hesitation about going to JP. Whether now or a year from now, it's still a very scary situation. I'm not saying to live life in fear, but to be cautious about a situation that is developing should at least leave you questioning it.

First and foremost, food consumption regarding local produce are you just going to shovel in some awesome ramen? What about cultivated seaweed in sushi? I think if you choose to be oblivious to the fact, that in itself proves a lack of sense.

I've done my fair share of thrills and going to JP because I believe the entire region isn't compromised in my opinion is completely ignorant.

I'm affected by this on both a personal and professional level so I'm not being biased due to any historical incident related to japan. I'm truly an advocate of resolving this problem because I wish to visit one day. With the current happenings, lack of information, and my own logically sense I'm steering clear of any trips until I'm comfortable with the amount of information and status of the current situation.
