Am I the only person who thinks that when he says "gay" he means "happy"? I thought he was using it as a term for the cheesey happy stereotyped trance, rather than the more darker experimental stuff.

That aside, he wasn't slating trance either. Everyone on these boards seem to rant on about awful "cheese" tracks. All Tiesto said was that producers are finding new way to diverge from this sound.

We also have to remember there is no proof that this was actually said

"Fuck" as in "good" right?

Pio said mostly everything I was thinking. I'm sure if Tijs really did say, "gay" he meant "light," "airy," "happy."

That's something you'd expect immature young people to say, and not a 35 year old man. Where's the interview???? Cut and paste it...

it's so GAY when ppl misunderstand a quote.

i seem to be the only one who likes tiesto's new style more than his old style. even if his mixing skills ain't the best in the world.

but it does seems like he's moving slowly into becoming a pop star as a producer. doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be "another Oakie", at least till now the colaboration he did with a star (DJ Tiesto ft. Skin - Ten) sounded like a full-on trancer, instead of Oakie's awful MTV cheese. Seems like he's opening a door for *good trance* to be more mainstream.

Guys, he's NOT from the US, and spends little time here. The word gay may not have the same meaning to him, I doubt he was trying to be offensive. About the beatmatching ability - he's not the greatest beatmatcher but his skills aren't absolutely horrible or even mediocre, they're above average, adequate, and once in awhile phenomenal. Like someone else said, that's not the only thing that goes into being a great dj. The best example of this is Tiesto - Live @ Innercity, Amsterdam, the released cd. Even though it's old, his tracklisting is phenomenal, a masterpiece, and in my opinion his mixing on this album is flawless, especially for a live set. The world changes as do people, just embrace what he's doing, if it's not your style look elsewhere for it. I've loved about half the stuff he's released recently and had no interest in the other half. He's still a contributor none the less. Magik Journey, Suburban Train, have been great quality releases to the scene over the past couple of years, and I'm eagerly awaiting the Nyana release, can't wait to hear it. I really didn't even mind that he left Gouryella, Ligaya is still a great track. From the post about his recent DJ sets, I saw him a few months ago and I have to say it was mediocre, but I'm thinking twice about seeing him in NYC on the 16th as maybe he's starting to really get a hold of his new style... I think I'd start to get bored with a 6 hour set of all '98-'99 anthems anyway...

In my reply, I stated that his comments could have been taken out of context. Besides, the word 'gay' means happy and not the prejudiced term that so many American ppl like to use it for. So can you honestly say that he was saying that trance music is 'gay' in a derogatory way? ESPECIALLY considering that he is probably not keen on the derogatory ways the word 'gay' is used across America being that he is NOT American? I'm not so sure since I wasn't the one who said it, he was. Maybe he meant it that way, maybe he didn't. Only he would know. I think misinterpretation is one of the biggest things that can cause bad rumors.

the more I think about it, the more I think it IS being interpretted incorrectly.

think about it... 'gay' = 'happy'

Tiesto music throughout the years has become a lot darker. His music selection is definitely still epic trance with dashes of prog/tech but it has a more 'sad' and darker tone to it. So, being that his sound is more 'sad', he would definitely makes comments about Gouryella music being 'happy' a.k.a. 'gay' and therefore something he isn't interested in.

Anyways, that's MY interpretation and i'm sticking to it!

This is right on. End of Story.
