Rank 1 uses Mozart in a new way.
Trancelovers won't let the new Sensation theme go unnoticed this june. It's a contemporary rework of Mozarts' 'Lacymosa' made by Rank 1. For those who don't know the original: a beautiful melodic piece of work which was prominently featured in the movie 'Amadeus'. Very suitable for a theme because of it's exciting buildup and compelling character.
That was the base for Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij, the two producers that form Rank 1. With their 'Airwave', 'Such Is Life' and their remix of 'The Orange Theme', they have shown they can handle heavy melodies. Yet it wasn't so easy to fix 'Lacrymosa' up with a computerbeat and strings. Benno de Goeij explains: "It was an enormous challenge for us to do. It does feel a bit like desecration when you're reworking something that has been created by a genius centuries ago. Mozart was brilliant, not a note or tone is misplaced. That means you certainly musn't change the melody. It was very difficult, yet very interesting because of the very long melody which we had to use in such a way that it won't become boring on the dancefloor. Because you can't simply cut the melody up in pieces which you're able to use later on, you must make sure you build up a lot of tension around it. Whether the audience likes it or not, we sure feel satisfied with the result because it's a catchy tune that sounds a whole lot better in a stadium than in a small club. That's what's a theme is all about."
It's not the first time a classical piece has been used by danceproducers. The German producing duo Cygnus X has done it in 1994 with 'The Orange Theme', based on the bombastic symphonies of Beethoven which give Stanley Kubricks 'A Clockwork Orange' it's bizarre feel. And the visitors of Innercity 2000 will clearly remember when Ferry Corsten played his rework of 'Barber's Adiago For Strings', known of the war-movie 'Platoon'. The heavenly sounds gave the audience 'kippenvel' . This shows that it can work out great; classical music wrapped in dance. Piet Bervoet agrees but stresses out that it was only a one-time only project for him. "That it works and that we're satisfied with the result doesn't mean we'll be doing this more often. It was more like a request from the Sensation organization to rework the song than it was our own idea. As far as we go, we'll just focus on creating our own, new productions."
