Let's remember there's a difference between something being cheesy and something being commercial. If it's cheesy it sounds rank and tacky. If it's commercial it means it's been hyped up and exposed to a large percentage of the population via (does Dr. Evil's quoting fingers thing) "wireless radio". They usually go hand in hand because, for some reason, the public likes music that sounds crass, simple and just generally shithouse, but it's possible for a track to be cheesy without being particularly commercial and vice-versa.

Therefore:

Chicane - Saltwater = Commercial but not cheesy.
Rank 1 - Airwave = Cheesy but not commercial.

Thoughts?

when was YOUR favourite track played on Nova, Pointy?

i mean ffs, sif have a personal dig at someone for saying their likes/dislikes of music and radio stations

have i EVER tried to insult someone on this forum personally?

Dude...you have totally missed the point of the scenario i just laid out. Therefore, i'll re say it - Remember, this is a scenario. Nick, I am the midday DJ on Nova 100.3 in Melbourne. I wanna be a cool cat, so i pull out a copy of *drumroll* Ayumi Hamaskaki - Proglogue (Hybrid mix)!!! OMG, thats your favourite song ever!! IT'S NEVER GONNA BE CHEESE PROCLAIMS M!! But wait! The clock strikes 1 in the afternoon, i put the song on for all of Melbourne to hear. Going by ur theory, ayumi hamaskaki - proglogue (hybrid mix) is now cheese, no?

Your favourite tune is now cheese cos it's been played on midday radio. Now all the little 13 year old sluts who buy boost n viva religiously are rushing out in gangs to buy copies of this tune. They get Ayumi Hakasaki down for a 10 minute set at the next Rumba. A radio mix is released and it appears of every Ministry of Sound, Wild and Skitz Mix CDs for the next 9 months. But wait...i thought this was ur favourite tune ever? It still isn't cheesey i hope?

true, very true

however i think its safe to say that nova will never play it at 1pm unless one of you guys are there... but if that scenario does happen, and Ayumi becomes demanded so often on the hour every hour as nova seems to have a policy for, then i will probably hear it over

and over

and over

and over again

and as Ves puts it "Cheese is just a track i dont like" <- (not an exact quote), i would eventually start to get annoyed by it from hearing it so often and (god forbid) find it cheesy

but still, i respect you are pretty well right... but u gotta admit that hearing the same track over and over again sounds good at the start, but u CAN have too much of a good thing.... like porn

haha pointy they wouldn't release a radio edit, just all the original J-Pop styled ones, then there'd be an epidemic of instead of mongs requesting "the munchkin song" (scooter) it would be idiots requesting the "funny asian one".

dashing, handsome somewhat slim-mer,
and if you play your cards right
then he might just cooome round for din-ner"

I still find that the overall popularity of a song does change it's feel. For instance Tomcraft - Loneliness, I first heard it at the end of last year, thought it was a good song, and let it be. Awhile later i saw it in the shops and decided to purchaise a copy and it fit well in my sets as a transition track between prog and trance. After another month i noticed it was no 1 in the UK charts and everytime i played it everyone recognised it as a charttopper and bagged me cause I usually bag chart trance (Ian Van Dahl, Darude, that I died in your arms tonight song etc.). But I still think it's a good song.

I still think cheese is just a term used by one genre loving society to bag another more commercial genre of electronic music. To prog lovers all trance is cheese. To "underground" trance lovers simple hard trance is cheese. Personally I love a good sprinkle of cheddar on any high energy set (eg Benico, CJ Stone, Svenson & Gielen etc.).
